Pipe route design of ship is one of the most complex planning and design task. There are billions of complex-shaped components and equipment scattered in a small engine room. Walls, equipment and components are obstacles of pipes and interacts each other. Routing of pipes should meet various design constraints or requirements for physical, economic, safety, production, operational and maintenance, etc. This process is done by hand in practice rely on the experience of the designer. Achieve the automatic plan of piping is considered as the key element for reducing design time, cutting construction cost and ensuring effective solution. For the above reasons, a method for simulation-based 3D pipe-routing automatic plan of ship engine room is proposed. The main study included:1. Based on literature research, the rules for pipe route design of ship are collected, analyzed and inducted.2. To minimize and rapid construct the simulation scene of arrangement by using the representation of information-completed models, the objective scene is divided into small modules and models of obstacles are simplified. At the same time, free space modeling method is introduced to processing constraints relevant to operation and maintenance space.3. Hanging bridge algorithm and re-cross algorithm are proposed as the solution for pipe-routing arrangements using free spaces models. Path patterns of pipe for layered or blocked layout are planned respectively according to special rules. A factor is presented to evaluate the spatial effect of pipe-routing.4. Finally, use CAD system as a programming platform, an example based on real ship environment is given to validate the approach by comparing the obtained planning with the actual design of the ship.Comparison results show that the proposed method is correct and effective; the data of connecting nodes of piping design is reliable. The proposed approach is closely related to the facts of current ship design.
