With the change of science and technology on each passing day, the shipbuilding technology also develops fast. The automatization and intelligentizing level of marine mechanical and electrical equipment rises step by step, their technical share and complexity also greatly increased, that is a big challenge to the competence of the operator and the old maintenance system. Many years ago, the preventive maintenance method based on time was applied to our shipping enterprises. With the development of technology, its shortcoming is obvious: One aspect, time maintenance will be carried out during the equipment being normal operation with all their parts working normal and being in relative good running performance, meanwhile they have not the necessity to be maintained that will lead to human force and money loss. Another, during the interval of time maintenance, it's hard to find out some heavy potential defective if without any strong monitoring methods applied to the equipment, this also will result in big loss.From standpoint of application engineering, under the background of a 40,000 tons ocean-sailing bulk carrier in a shipping enterprise, This paper comprehensive analysis the characteristics and actuality of automatic inspection and intelligent fault diagnosis which integrate many knowledge fields and many advanced technologies, combine them with the functions and running characteristics of the equipment in ship's engine room, utilize the advantages of new technology about computer, network communication and artificial intelligence, design a set of high security and reliability, high efficiency and stability condition-based maintenance system in ship's engine room ,which is according to the construction rules of the classification society.This system is based on the devices' status on-line monitoring and fault diagnosis, can monitor their working condition on real time, compare the acquisition with data in the equipment's running database built before and make judgment in time, give warnings when found some performance index deteriorating or data abnormal, help the maintenance staff to find out the devices' fault symptom and potential danger intime, maintenance them before the fault comes out to prevent heavy accident happens. This maintenance method could mostly eliminate the phenomenon of excess maintenance which comes out from traditional ship's time maintenance and of incorrect or irrational maintenance by engine crew who may lack of experience, to reach the goal of running ship's rational and scientific maintenance, avoiding heavy loss, reducing running cost, enhancing the shipping enterprise's competitive power.
