Traffic problem is an important problem all over the world, it has seriously influenced the society, how to solve it is the key problem people pay attention to, now,?intelligent transportation system? which aims to solve the traffic problem using the advanced science and technology, is becoming the research emphasis in traffic fields; meanwhile, agent technology, a new paradigm of computer and distributed artificial intelligence, regarded as the development of the objectoriented , provides a new ways for the research of complicated systems and is the focus of computer science, it also gives a new hopeful direction for traffic problem. therefore, according to this traffic situation and the newly agent technology, along with the intelligent control technology, this thesis discusses a new method to deal with traffic problem.At first, according to the agent theory and the feature of traffic system, based on analyzing the drawbacks of the present traffic control architecture, this thesis puts forward the Agent-based Intelligent Traffic Control System (AITCS), in this system, the traffic control strategy is made by the junction layer, every junction controls the traffic flow though its knowledge and communication with others, this improves the intelligence of the junction layer , and it is more flexible for the control system to suit the variable traffic condition.Because of the complexity of traffic system , traffic simulation is the important means in the research on traffic problem, the characteristics of the agent, such as autonomycooperation ,provide a excellent ways to traffic simulation ,therefore, on the basis of AITCS, this thesis mainly explores the issues of agent-based intelligent traffic simulation, in this simulation, vehicle.. street.. junction and traffic light are regarded as intelligent agent, this thesis discusses the main architecture and property of the four simulation objects ,considering the advantage of fuzzy control , the fuzzy logic is introduced into the decision-making of vehicle agent, which makes decision according to the external environment and its internal states during free-driving, carfollowing and overtaking, then, though analyzing the research situation on agent and the relationship between agent and object, this thesis explains the feasibility of using object-oriented method to realize the agent, and which is adopted in this research, furthermore, the Agent-based Intelligent Traffic Simulation Prototype System(AITSPS) is developed on Windows NT and using VC6.O, this system can allow the user to set the attribute of different agents, realizes the dynamic visual simulation of traffic scenario , traffic agents can interactive with others and adjust their action, now, this system can implement the simple simulation of car-following.. overtaking.Besides, this thesis also presents fuzzy-based multi-phase intelligent signal control strategy according to the deficiencies of present traffic signal control system and the research of fuzzy traffic signal control, this signal control strategy focuses on the single junction signal control problem, though imitating the ways of traffic police managing the traffic, it has the ability of intelligent phase changing and controlling in the light of the real traffic flow, the simulation result shows: in two- and multi-phase conditions, the average vehicle delay is reduced by 15% and by 27% compared with the general fuzzy control method.
