This thesis is an independent part of a larger project called SUCCESS (Sustainable Users Concepts For China Engaging Scientific Scenarios), a European Commission sponsored, Sino-European Study on Sustainability in 7 Chinese Settlements in six different regions. (ICA4-CT-2001-10007)China is a big agriculture country where most population still live in the rural area, so the development and construction in the rural area, which is far more behind of those of the cities today, is very important to a sustainable development of the whole country. In the past, most of the construction and development in the rural area is spontaneous and lacks of scientific instruction. At the same time, it lacks of significant theory and practices on the integrative development between villages and towns on sustainable development and construction, especially in the field of architecture and urban planning. Apparently, the sustainable development and construction scenario making in the rural area should be different to those of the towns. Based on the concepts and definition of sustainability, this study regards a village as a system as a whole and tries to study Chinese village module making with the methodology of system. Moreover, it tries to propose some basic principles and thoughts for a sustainable village's development, and at the same time, apply it to several case study villages and make experimental planning of the villages based on the current situation of the rural area in China. The thesis includes two parts and it tries to apply the concepts of sustainability to the practice of Chinese village evolution from both theoretical and practical level. Moreover, it tries to study and explore the future scenarios of a Chinese village through balance seeking in the triad of ecology, economy, socio-culture, and on the context of built environment. The first part of the thesis is a theoretical part, which is the theory and methodology part of the study carrying out in the thesis. Importing traditional systematic thoughts and modern system theory to the research, it tries to offer a scientific methodology for the study. The contexts of the first part include Chinese traditional systematic thoughts, modern system theory and self-organized methodology and the analysis and study of the evolution modes of Chinese villages with the methodology mentioned above. The study of sustainable village pattern aims to study the architecture and village pattern that relates to its ecology, economy and socio-culture as a dynamic and comprehensivethat relates to its ecology, economy and socio-culture as a dynamic and comprehensive system as a whole. As a complex system, in general, a Chinese village has three types of evolution, nature evolution, Catastrophe evolution and an ideal evolution. The third one tries to seek balance between reality (fast development) and possibility (sustainable development), and it can be regarded as one of the potential sustainable modules for Chinese villages under current fast development.Furthermore, the first part puts forward the research structure of a sustainable village and discusses about Theory and Principles of "Acupuncture Point" in a village, Characteristics of a self-organizing village and Sustainable Scenarios Making of a village. The methodology of scenario making in a sustainable village can be applied to all the villages to lead the sustainable development based on their local carrying capacity specifically and keep their self-organizing evolution on their own.The second part is an experimental part, which is the experiment part on sustainable scenario making in the case study villages. Based on the concrete field study data, it analyzes the current carrying capacity of a village, then, study the ecology, local economy, social culture and local village pattern and building pattern specifically and their relationships to one another in a village system as a whole in the four case study villages, Bei suzha village (Henshui, He bei province), Xia futou (Boai, He nan province), San yuan village (Lijiang, Yun nan province) and Xiao qi village (Wuyuan, Jiang xi province). Furthermore, it studies the "Acupuncture points " and the upgrading modes and future scenarios in each village. These potential "Acupuncture Points" space and their relationship will reconstruct a dynamic village pattern and a future scenario of a sustainable self-organized village as a whole. The study of sustainable module making of a village is based on the understanding of the special culture landscape come into being spontaneously in a village, its local culture, knowledge and building tradition, its specific village system, its nature evolution mode and the socio-culture system relates to it, etc.Upgrading the local culture landscape in a sustainable village offers a new thought to the sustainable development and urbanization of the current village. From a long term of view, a village under a continues upgrading process on its local culture landscape will develop its own sustainable development pattern, which will led it to a superior development above the...
