Construction, Field And Style Of Craftsmen

Based on the field research and communication with local craftsmen, in this thesis the writer focuses mainly on the observation and record of traditional wood structure building techniques on "Yi Ke Yin"( typical Vernacular dwellings of south Yunnan province),and has developed theoretical analysis on it. The elementary analysis on the facture of the wall, the floor and the painting is also included in this thesis.The thesis is composed of two parts. On the basis of the first-hand data which is accumulated by interviewing more than 30 local craftsmen and tracing the development of construction sites with the anthropology methods of participant-observation and Depth interview, it's honestly reflected in the first part the program, the construction way, the ritual and the taboo of traditional wood structure building techniques and the techniques, the idea and the style of the craftsmen. All these contents cover from the operation of techniques to the culture of construction.Theoretical study on traditional wood structure building techniques of "Yi Ke Yin" has been carried out in the second part based on the first one. The basic point of this part is the erection of the concept of "craftsmen's field" which is referred to the "Field Theory" of French sociologist Bourdieu. The purpose of this concept is to analyze the social basis of the construction of traditional vernacular buildings and to reveal the inheritance and cultivation system of the craftsmen's techniques. The inevitable fate of traditional vernacular buildings from prosperity to downfall is revealed with further analysis on the social basis of the construction of traditional vernacular buildings in modern times - the change of life style which spurred also the change of architectural form, techniques, materials and concepts.It's revealed in the end the positive meaning and inspiration of the study on the traditional vernacular buildings to modern architecture theory, education and design.
