The response and safety of rock slope(landslide) under earthquake are the difficulties and hot spot in construction of hydraulic engineering in intensive earthquake area of West China. In this paper, the deformation characteristics and stability of bedding slopes under earthquake have been analyzed in detail by distinct element method.The permanent displacements of some slopes are calculated by two-dimensional program of UDEC and Newmark method, respectively. Comparison between the calculating results and the field values of earthquake induced displacements proposes that the displacements calculated by Newmark method are lower than the field values and the displacements simulated by UDEC are close to the field values. Then, the influences of height and angle of bedding slope, angle of interface as well as earthquake parameters including amplitude, frequency and duration time on the permanent displacement characteristics of rock bedding slope under earthquake were analyzed.Based on the shear strength reduction technique, a new method of how to compute the factor of safety of slopes under earthquake is proposed. It is suggested that the equilibrium condition is estimated based on the trend of the key point's displacement or velocity series and the slide interface is judged by the velocity or displacement vectors of the unstable condition. Based on the new method, the factor of safety of Zhongjiawan bedding slope is calculated by UDEC and compared with the results calculated by LEM (limit equilibrium method). It is revealed that the values calculated by UDEC are close to those by LEM and their trends are nearly accordant, which indicate that the new method is feasible and reasonable. Then, the influences of height and angle of bedding slope, angle of interface as well as earthquake parameters including amplitudes and frequency on the factor of safety of rock bedding slope under earthquake were analyzed.
