Water Spaces In Cities

Urban water spaces and water landscapes are the precondition and foundation of scientifically disposing the city resources, promoting the city function and its competition capability, improving the habitat environment and the investment climate, and achieving the sustainable development for a city. Healthy and vigorous water spaces and landscapes are the emphases for assuring the coordinating development of"human, water, city and nature"and the necessary condition for achieving urban sound development. The subject of this paper is the plan and design of water spaces and landscapes for the cities, with the relation between city and people as the core. In addition, the utilization of unconventional water resources also was discussed. The paper is aimed at the research for achieving a harmonious relation between city and water by making use of urban plan and design, with water as source and human as base.The paper contains seven sections. In chapterâ… ,the background and the meaning of the research were introduced, the main contents and study methods were clarified, the basic related concepts were interpreted.. The concept of water spaces in cities was imported and the significance of it was illuminated. Finally, the innovation points and framework of the research was pointed out.Chapter II is the summary and the analysis of the history development for water spaces in cities. The section is divided into two subsections. The first subsection summarizes water landscape plan and design in the ancient cities in both thinking and practical aspects. It probes the origin of water landscape plan and design from various aspects, analyzes the influence of the ancient philosophy and culture upon the water landscape plan, and also analyzes the related technologies and the relations of form and structure between water spaces plan and urban space. The second subsection reviews the evolvement of the water spaces and landscapes in both thinking and practice for recent years and contemporary times, through which we can understand the process of the water space landscape plan from passiveness to activeness, from blindness to science, and from the spontaneity to the consciousness, explore the causes of conversion and hold the trend of the change and development for it in the future.The third chapter generalizes the ideal pattern of the whole and coordination development of water space landscape system.
