The overdevelopment of new areas following the rapid growth of China's cities resulted in worsening condition of the physical environment. It is therefore necessary to start systematic and predictive research on change in and influences on the physical environment in new area. Such research will benefit the sustainable development of the physical environments of Chinese cities.Large-scale development of new areas in Chinese cities is a recent phenomenon. Due to the different development stresses, municipal governments often emphasize the economy and neglect the environment. Adopting theoretical and practical methods, the thesis first examines the history, theory, and modes of new area development and defines and analyzes the implication of new areas, forming a theoretical basis of new area development research. On the basis of the research on new area development, the thesis analyzes the worsening conditions of the physical environment and treats questions of thermal environment, acoustical environment, luminous environment, and electromagnetic environment and their influence on the whole city's physical environment. This thesis argues that new area's physical environment accord with that of the whole city and be systematic and comprehensive. Mainly depending on predictive research on new area physical environment, and using overseas research methods, including the ANN(artificial nerve network) method, the thesis analyzes the predictive subjects and influential genes, which form the different macrocosmic and microcosmic predictive model systems of thermal environments, acoustical environments, luminous environments and electromagnetic environments. The mode is applied to the analysis of the Hexi New Area development in Nanjing city and offers some proposals. Finally, using fuzzy analyses method, the thesis sets up an evaluation model and corresponding comprehensive evaluation system. Moreover, the thesis also concludes that computer technology, layout of predictive research on the New Area physical environment, and innovation of environment management will be the direction of the research in this field. The innovations of this thesis are as follows:1. This is the first time to pay attention on the New Area development from the influence of the city's physical environment.2. This is the first time that a Chinese thesis has focused on macrocosmic and microcosmic aspects of the urban physical environment in dealing with thermal, acoustical, luminous and electromagnetic.3.The thesis uses the artificial nerve network method to build a macrocosmic predictive model and computer software to predict the New Area layout.4. According to the fuzzy evaluation model, the thesis forms a simple method to evaluate the influence on the physical environment from the New Area development.5. According to influential factors, the thesis offers a series of suggestions to improve the new area physical environment.
