The construction of conservation-oriented universities, one of the vital parts of the construction of a conservation-oriented society, not only meets the need of achieving sustainable development but also is the social responsibility that the universities should bear. Teaching buildings are one of indispensable material conditions of school education and the important media of information circulation and knowledge diffusion, therefore their designs are affected by changes in education ideas, teaching methods and modern people's psychology, behavior and sentiment, and improve constantly with the development of society. The adaptive renovation of the teaching buildings of universities is the effective means to reduce resource consume and environmental pollution. It has profound pratical significances in protecting the environment, maintaining ecological balance and the sustainable development of human society and continuing the historical culture. As to sustainable development of the buildings, we consider not only the durability of the buildings but also the durability of the environment and resources around us. The comfortable indoor environment remains the important goal of energy-conservation building design. It emphasizes on creating high-quality space, healthy and comfortable environment and perfect building form by making full use of comprehensive factors such as nature and climate. The research objective herein is teaching buildings of universities in northern cold area and severe cold area, whose main characteristic is to adopt hot water centralized heating system in winter. The design of energy-saving buildings there should give priority to the idea of keeping warm in winter, and preventing from being hot in summer appropriately. Aiming at the serious aging phenomenon and the poor indoor environment of some teaching buildings built before the 1990s, this paper proposes the adaptive renovation strategies—applicability, suitability and harmony. Adopting research approaches such as theory analysis, on-the-spot test, questionnaire investigation and computer simulation, this paper makes objective appraisal on hot environment, wind environment, illumination environment of teaching buildings of northern universities and analyzes the main problems in indoor environmental quality according to their construction characteristics and the differences of different user's behavior and psychology. On the basis of cold climate characteristics, natural conditions and the particularity of old building renovation, this paper puts forwards integration strategies and technology principles of the energy-conserving optimization design and probes into the systematic application of passive-form energy-saving reconstruction technology in the teaching buildings of the universities.
