Study On Architectural Design Innovation Of The Pritzker Architecture Prize Winners

Innovation of architectural design has become one of the hottest topics in the domain of architecture. More and more architects were paying more attention to the innovation of architectural design. If they can draw lessons from the innovation of architectural design of the outstanding architects in the world, they can reach double result with half work while exploring the innovation of architectural design. Since the later half of the 20 century, many outstanding architects devoted into the innovation of architectural design, especially the Pritzker Prize winners. Thus, the innovation of architecture design of the Pritzker Prize winners has become the important problem which needs to be thoroughly studied.Based on the theory of innovation, this paper discussed the characteristics of the innovation of architectural design of the Pritzker Architecture Prize winners, put forward the individual traits and time features of their innovation of architectural design, studied the theory and practices of the architectural design of the Pritzker Prize winners systematically and summarized their exploration to the innovation of architectural design.This paper pointed out that the innovation personality of the Pritzker Architecture Prize winners were affected not only by the environmental factors such as society, economy, technology, culture, philosophy or region, but by their own innovation qualities as well on basis of the analysis of the background and environments of their innovation of architectural design. This paper comparatively analyzed the personality characteristics of the Pritzker Prize winners from 1979 to 2008 and discussed the inheriting-innovation of the Pritzker Prize winners from 1979 to 1988, the multi-aspect exploration of the Pritzker Prize winners from 1989 to 1999 and the rational reversion of the Pritzker Prize winners from 2000 to 2008.This paper studied the exploration of the Pritzker Architecture Prize winners for the innovation of the conception of architectural design, discussed the innovative conceptions put forward by them during their work and pointed out that their new ideas and principles of architectural design included the intergrowth of building and nature, the fusion of building and culture, the conformity of building and city and the combination of building and art. It indicated that their conception innovation of architectural design exceeded the classical principle of architectural design of'firmness, commodity and delight', richened the contents of the architectural theory and provided the theoretical basis for the practical innovation of architectural design.This paper studied the exploration of the Pritzker Architecture Prize winners for the innovation of architectural form, discussed their innovation of architectural form from the three aspects of form, space and details, pointed out that they created many new architectural forms which were different from the modernism architecture of the early 20th century on the basis of the comprehensive consideration of external form and inner logical laws. Form innovation included the innovation of geometric constitution, dynamic form, single form, nature simulation and organic huge form. Space innovation consisted of the innovation of narration space, complicated space, equal space, ecological space and virtual space. Detail innovation comprised the innovation of symbolization detail, component detail and humanization detail.This paper studied the exploration of the Pritzker Architecture Prize winners for the innovation of building technology and analyzed their practical innovation of building technology thoroughly from the following four aspects. The first was based on the illation of the building material which was comprised of the improvement of the characteristic of materials, material processing techonology, and constitution form and type seletion. The second was based on the structure optimization which consisted of new building construction system, change of partial construction and the independence of epidermal structure. The third was based on the ecological methods which included indoor greening, natural ventilation, natural lighting and double-layer curtain wall. The fourth was based on the application of computer techonology which were comprised of the establishment of digital model, the simulation analysis of design data and the virtual construction. This paper pointed out that all of these innovations of building technology solved the problems in their design process to make the innovation of their architectural design easy to implement.The innovation of this paper lay in introducing the innovation theory to study the exploration for the innovation of architectural design of the Pritzker Architecture Prize winners, summarizing the personality characteristics and the time characteristics of the innovations of their architectural designs, studying the innovations of their design conceptions to establish their theoretical system of the innovation of architectural design from the four aspects of nature, culture, city and art, expatiating on their innovation of architectural form to make the basis for the further research from the three aspects of form, space and detail, studying their innovations of building technology to provide valuable suggestions for architects to make use of more new technologies in their architectural design inventively. According to the research of this paper, it is evident to note that it's just because of the utilization of time spirit, new conception, new forms and new technology to theire architectural designs to make them creative. The research of this paper would improve the latter research of innovation of architectural design greatly.
