For the purpose of being helpful to doing pest risk analysis of imported fruits, identifying intercepted pests on fruits at the port of entry, analyzing and predicting domestic pest species that may become a barrier of fruits exportation, and improving fruit quarantine against the insect pests, this paper studys and makes use of diversity and information of carpophagous insect pests in the world.Those insect species with following characteristics are included: their hosts are generally edible; specially or sometimes damage fruit part; with comparatively large possibility of being carried by fruits; primary carpophagous insects. This paper has collected 304 species of carpophagous insect pests, belonging to 20 families, with each species having the following types of information: names, taxonomic position, distribution, host, biology, external characters (with black and white figures) etc, leading to publication of the book "Carpophagous Insect Pests". In the meantime, the related host fruits is listed, on the basis of international standard ISO 1998 no.7563 "The Fresh Fruits and Vegetables-Glossary".New assessing methods of dangerous species have been posed based on the existing ones. Dangerousness is taken into consideration when a pest species is selected for quarantine. The formula for calculation is: [value of dangerousness] = [value of distribution] X [value of being carried by host] X [value of importance of host] X [value of spreadability] X [value of economic importance]. Calculation standard for values of different factors is established. Applying the above assessing methods, it is determined that 228 species are of quarantine importance.For making computer identification system, a key for adults including almost all the species and another key for some species of caterpillars are compiled. The computer tables for identification system presents a new kind of insects identification key in insect taxonomy.Based on above works, the thesis developed Consultative and identification- assistant System of Carpophagous Insect Pests run at local machine, and its edition run in Internet with ASP technology and Java language. This system has following functions: inquire by scientific name; inquire by origin, host and taxonomic position; inquire for dangerous species; assistance with identification of species through retrieval by external characters; prediction of species which will possibly become obstacles to exporting fruits of China.In general, this paper has following characteristics and innovations: (1) It meets the requirement of fruit production, trade and quarantine after our country took part in WTO, will lead to good social and economic results. (2) It is a first attempt to construct the knowledge system of carpophagous insect pests. It puts together and makes use of information of carpophagous insect pests in the world. (3) Through improvement, it raises a new practical assessment method of dangerous species. (4) A new kind of insects identification key in insect taxonomy is designed. (5) A method of making computer identification system is developed.
