At present, Hohhot is attracting more and more global attentions because of the environmental problems caused by its rapid urbanization. Due to these special situations, a study on optimizing and constructing the landscape pattern of urban green space is conducted to improve the environmental conditions and increase the amount of urban green space in the city. The study is focused on quantifying green space landscape and classifying the functions of these green spaces in Hohhot as well as estimating its value and subsequently a functional zoning of Hohhot is defined. Based on the above study, the landscape pattern of green space in Hohhot and a pattern of each functional zone were suggested.The study area is located mainly within the second ring of Hohhot's urban area, and the surroundings are utilized as a reference. The green spaces are classified according to their functional features, and experiments were conducted to obtain the data needed to identify the ecological benefits of these urban green spaces; then we used several indices such as the fragmentation index, Shannon diversity, evenness, dominance, LPI, patch density etc to provide sufficient information for the construction of a green space pattern. Based on these results, the structure of urban green space was optimized and the green space landscape pattern of the entire urban area has been completed. Then the landscape pattern of the urban green space for each functional zone of Hohhot was constructed, based on the analysis of the survey and the features of each functional zone, as well as the features of green space of each functional zone.The results of this study on the landscape structure showed that the three main indices were lower than those required for a garden city. The results of the diversity indices showed that maximum diversity exists in the green space of residential areas and work units with a value of 5.528, the lowest diversity indices exist in landscape forests, water areas and public green spaces with values of 0.000, 1.606 and 2.415 respectively. The maximum evenness exists in rural landscapes and roadside green spaces with values of 90.062 and 88.368 respectively; the minimum exists in water areas with a value of 49.900. The patch fragmentation index is high in total area; its greater distribution is within the first city ring and its lesser distribution within the area between the first and second city rings; the density of green corridors in Yuquan district is highest with a value of 2.00, and the lowest density of green corridors is in Saihan district with a value of 1.58.Based on the above study, the properties and the structures of the landscape of urban green space have been optimized and the original green space landscape pattern of the entire urban area has been promoted. The landscape pattern of the urban green space for each functional zone has coincided with its features and functional requirements. A top priority of this study was to respect the ecological process. Finally, some practical and valuable measures were offered to enforce these patterns.
