This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part mainly sorts out and discusses the theoretical connotation of the liver governing free coursing, analyzes its relationship with the theory of" four seasons-five zang viscera-yin and yang". In the second part, based on the TCM Inheritance Support System, statistic analysis is carried out on the medical cases treated from the failure of the liver’s free coursing since the founding of China, and data mining is used to analyze the clinical application law of the theory of the liver governing free coursing, and in addition, it provides data support for the reflection area of the liver’s function of governing free coursing on the body surface. In the third part, infrared thermal imaging is applied to observe the seasonal changes of healthy body in order to find the infrared thermography of the liver governing free coursing and the its seasonal changes in order to provide scientific support for the essence of the theory of liver governing free coursing. In the first part, the paper begins by sorting out and analyzing the theory of the liver governing free coursing, and concludes the following points:(1) the liver stated in the Huangdi’s Inner Classic of Medicine is the liver of four seasons which is related with natural environment. It takes five elements as the intermediary, and corresponds with spring; (2) in long term practice, ancient doctors found that the functional features of the liver is closely related to wood, that’s why the liver pertains to wood. In the era of the Huangdi s Inner Classic of Medicine, physicians have recognized the liver’s characteristics of governing upbearing and effusion, and liking orderly reaching. (3) in the Huangdi’s Inner Classic of Medicine, it has been stated that wood has the features of "free coursing"; (4)yang qi exists objectively in human body is beginning base for Zhu Danxi’s theory of ministerial fire. Therefore, the liver governing free coursing is in the frame work of ministerial fire; (5) with the time processing and accumulation of medical practical experience, the content of the liver governing free coursing is getting constantly extending and developing, and its extension is expanding constantly, and its theoretical connotation is enriching and perfecting. The function of the liver’s free coursing has already involved foodstuff essence, productive essence, water fluid, qi movement, and emotions, therefore it has the nature of overall functional regulating and control. (6). "free coursing " has the meaning of dredging and draining. Free coursing is the abstract and generalization of variety of life movement mechanism manifested by movement. It is a dynamic process (7). Spring is the beginning of the year, in which yang qi initiates to grow, and all things on earth become flourishing. Only when the liver governs free coursing of yang qi, yang qi can grow and rise freely, human body can adapt to the changes of spring, and then keeps the coordination and unity with the natural environment. (8). From the perspective of western medicine, the liver’s function of governing free coursing has involved many systems such as digestive system, circulate system, nerve system, immune system, and endocrine system. (9). From the physiological and pathological mechanism, the functional essence of the liver governing free coursing is the integration of some functions of nerve system, endocrine system and some other systems. From this sense, the essence of the liver governing free coursing is a kind of overall functional regulating and controlling process in human body to guarantee the stable and orderly life movement of human body. Based on the above analysis, it is clear that the functional essence of the liver governing free coursing is an overall and functional regulating and control process, which can internally change with seasons, corresponds with spring, keeps the coordination and unity with natural environment; externally regulating the life movement of human body from an overall perspective to guarantee the stability and order of human body. Then the paper sorts out and discusses TCM Chronophysiology and its features, the philosophical background of "four seasons-yin and yang-five elements" and the connotation of the theory of "four seasons-five zang viscera-yin and yang" The result shows that the TCM Chronophysiology is characterized by the fact that the five zang viscera have the same rhythm with the four seasons, and share same features with yin-yang and five elements. Man and nature correspond with each other, and seasons and viscera are correlated. The core of the philosophical thought of "four seasons-yin and yang-five elements" is the four seasons, and the gist is the explanation of the cycling climate changes laws of germination in spring, growth in summer, harvest in autumn and storage in winter of yang qi in nature. The medical theory of "four seasons-five zang viscera-yin and yang" refers to the phenomenon that the yang qi in human body also follows the cyclical law of germination in spring, growth in summer, harvest in autumn and storage in winter. They respectively correspond to the four seasons:spring featured by germination, summer featured by growth, autumn featured by harvest and winter featured by storage. In human body, the functional system regulating the germination and rising of yang qi is the liver; the functional system regulating the growth and prosperity of yang qi is the heart; the functional system regulating the restraining and descending of yang qi is the lung; and the functional system regulating the storage of yang qi is the kidney.Lastly, it analyses and discusses the relationship between the liver governing free coursing and the five viscera corresponding to seasons, and holds that the liver, as the beginning of five zang-viscera. corresponding to seasons, is the intrinsic impetus. While the liver governing free coursing is the fundamental guarantee for the five zang-viscera corresponding to seasons. Only when the liver’s function of governing free coursing yang qi, and regulating qi movement gets normal play, can the free germination and rising of yang qi and the life rhythm of changing with seasons be guaranteed, and the five zang viscera’s function of corresponding to season be orderly developed, and man being coordinated and unified with nature can be realized. In the second part, it first describes the development of TCM Inheritance System Software and its application in traditional Chinese medicine research field at present. At present, the software is mainly used for the following aspects:experience summary of contemporary famous TCM doctors and scholars; medical records in ancient literature collection and data mining; data mining on the treatment medication rule of certain diseases; summary of the application law of commonly used Chinese medicinals; development and research of new drugs and the new prescription. Secondly, based on TCM Inheritance Support System, it carries out statistic analysis on the medical records treated from the liver’s failure of free coursing in order to present the clinical application of the theory of the liver governing free coursing since the founding of China to explicit the extension of the liver governing free coursing and provide data support for researching the essence of liver governing free coursing. The results show that female patients account majority, which explains that the liver’s function of free coursing has great correlation with females’ physiology and pathology. From the perspective of age, the patients between 20-50 years old accounted for 73.9%, which shows that the age between 20-50 years old is period in which the diseases caused by liver’s failure of free coursing are frequently occurred. Through the statistics of the symptoms, it can be found that the liver’s function of governing free coursing has larger correlation with digestive system and nervous system. Through the statistics of the western medicine diseases, it can be found that chronic gastritis and hepatitis B rank the top two of the diseases treated from the liver’s failure of free coursing. Through the statistics of TCM diseases, it can be seen that the 8 kinds of diseases with the frequency above 30 times mainly belong to the liver system and the spleen system. The top two are stomach duct pain and rib-side pain. Through the statistics of the TCM patterns, it can be found that the top two are liver depression and qi stagnation, and liver depression and spleen deficiency. Through the statistics of Chinese medicinals, it can be found that the top 12 Chinese medicinal are bupleurum, white peony root, licorice, angelica, poria, atractylodes, radix curcumae, rhizoma cyperi, fructus aurantii, tangerine peel, fructus gardeniae, and ligusticum wallichii. Based on the analysis of the above statistical results, and referring to division of the chest and abdomen in the Diagnostics of Chinese Medicine, we initially select the areas of stomach, abdomen, and two rib sides are selected initially to associate with the liver governing free coursing and are taken for infrared thermography experimental observation. In the third part, it first discusses the feasibility of applying infrared thermal imaging technology to research TCM theories, and finds that the infrared thermal imaging technology has high conformity with TCM theories:infrared thermal imaging technology can intuitively reflect the energy metabolism of the body-yin and yang, cold and heat from a holistic point of view. And it can be presented in front of people in digital and visualized form to show. This is identical to TCM’s holistic concept that human body is an organic whole, and man and nature coordinate with each other, and TCM lays emphasis on function rather than anatomy. Observing the seasonal change of the liver governing free coursing is similar to "measuring zang-viscera. with images" in the original thinking of traditional Chinese medicine. In this research, it is just measuring the liver viscus with the thermal image. Secondly, the infrared thermal images of 30 healthy young men are observed and analyzed on the four solar terms:vernal equinox, autumnal equinox, summer solstice, winter solstice. Through relative temperature, the temperature distribution of different parts of the body is reflected, and the law of seasonal change of two rib-sides, stomach and abdomen are analyzed, and it is found that the thermal changes of the two rib-sides conforms to the seasonal changes of yang qi, and the seasonal changes of the thermal value of two rib sides can reflect the functional status of the liver governing free coursing. The infrared thermal images of the two rib sides, stomach and abdomen of normal human body has certain changing law with the yin-yang and waning-waxing changes in the laws of nature, which shows that the essence of the liver governing free coursing is related to the law that yang qi changes with climatic seasons. It conforms to the theory that man and natural environment is of unity. The above three parts, are an organic unity of the whole. In the first part, the theoretical discussion is mainly to clear the theoretical connotation and essence of the liver governing free coursing. In the second part, Analysis of medical cased by data mining is to adopt scientific methods to explore the extension of liver governing free coursing from the perspective of clinical practice, and provide clinical data support for the theoretical research of the liver governing free coursing. The two is the dialectical unity. The connotation analysis is to explain what is the the liver governing free coursing from the theoretical aspect, and the extension analysis is to explore what are involved in the liver governing free coursing from the clinical practice aspect. This is the main purpose of theoretical study and data mining. And, in the second part, we associate with the surface region reflecting liver governing free coursing as stomach, belly and two rib sides, which provides relevant observation region for observing the seasonal variation of the liver’s free coursing by infrared thermography technique in the third part. Moreover, the result observed by infrared thermal images privide the scientific proof for the hypothesis in the first part.Based on the above results, the following points can be concluded:firstly the essence of the liver governing free coursing is the holistic and functional regulation process of coursing yang qi and regulating qi movement and corresponds with spring. This process can change with times, and correspond with spring, keeping the harmony between man and nature, and internally it adjusts life movement of human body to gurantee the stability of human body; secondly, the play of the liver governing free coursing is closely related to the functions of multi systems such as digestive, circulation, nerve, endocrine, immune and other systems. The synergy of certain functions of these systems can be manifested as the physiological seasional changes of the liver governing free coursing of yang qi to correspond with spring; thirdly, the theory "four-seaons—five zang viscera—yin and yang" that the liver governing free coursing lives on fundamentally lies in the seasonal changes rules formed by the earth revolutes around the sun. While the liver is inner driving force of the five zang viscera change with seasons, and the liver coursing yang qi is the fundamental guarantee of the five zang viscera corresponding to seasons. Fourthly, the liver coursing yang qi to correspond with spring is of scientific connotation. The seasonal changes in thermal value of the two rib-sides, stomach and belly can reflect the functional state of the liver governing free coursing.
