"Syndrome Differentiation and Holism concepts"are the main characteristic theory of Chinese medicine, yet it actually bases on the concepts of "Qi generates and determine matter". This thesis propose that "Qi generates and determine matter"is a philosophical theory of Qi as the ontology,Qi has its feature of generation, sensitivity, law, time and space, what an how Qi changes determinate the objects function and changing. This theory makes up core epistemology and methodology of chinese medicine. Not deep understanding of its core concepts results in weak use of its values, and generates a series doubt and misunderstanding, say how the theory of chinese medicine was created? What was its thoughts and methods? Worse still, some would regards Yin and Yang, Five elements as old belief, making chinese medicine fog, therefore it should be disposed.Besides, if we do not link the understanding of Qi and Symbol, Qi and matter, we would easily mistake "symbol classification method"and regard it as weak scientific support. Restriction of the scientific methods cannot answer what the epistemology and methodology of chinese medicine is, what the modern laboratory can just test its results, therefore how chinese medicine theory come out would be a doubt.Under this circumstance, there is a need to understand the background of chinese medicine theore ontology, and how it works. As professor TuYa say:"The method is not just a way,but it is also the spirit and nature of the issue."Only if clarified the core thoughts and methodology of chinese medicine, can it goes on. This dissertation will base on the theory of "Qi generates and determine matter"to develop its views of ontology, methodology, and epistemology of chinese medicine, introduce how it works as the main theme of creating chinese medicine theory. Research Methods:The first step should be clarify and indentify the meaning of Qi in chinese philosophy, by doing so, literature method, history method, and argumentative method would be used. Then I will link the relationship of Qi vs obects, symbol vs objects.Fininally I will introduce how it works as the core theory to produce chinese medicine theory say ZhangFu, channels and meridians, etiology and pathology, concepts of difficiency and abundance, and the herbals theory, etc. There are three main fields I need to investigate:1. The ancient philophy of Qi theory 2. HuangDiNeiJing and the chinese medicine books that relative to Qi thoughts 3. Modern Physical theory that are familiar with the concepts and characteristic of Qi, say the theory (or principle) of relativity, quantum physics, and the universal philophy.Professor MengQingYun had ever said:"Theory is a systematic views and propose, and it is developing, so we need to introduce the previous views;Theory should be practical, so only if linked with clinical cases,it will be clarified."This thesis would try hard to follow this rules. The thesis divide into two parts:the first part would introduce the theory of Qi in chinese philosophy, clarify the relations of Qi and symbol, Qi and objects, prove its right to be the ontology, methodology, epistemology of understanding life and universe. The second part would introduce how "Qi generates and determine matter"to generate the theory of chinese medicine, say ZhangXiang, channels and meridians, ShanJiao, concepts of deficiency and abundance, left side liver and right side lung, etiology differentiation, etiology and pathology, herbals theory, etc.and will link with the clinical cases and take a deep thoughts of Qi and objects, presence and absence, metaphysics and physics, origins and end, holism and isolated part, energy and material, time and changing, difference between chinese medicine and western medicine, etc. The main points of the thesis as follows:1. Establish the theory of "Qi generates and determine matter"as the main value of chinese medicine, and it generates the ideas of life, nature, etiology, treatment, and herbal theory. "Syndrome Differentiation and Holism concepts"is also the reflection of it.2. The feature of Qi is invisible and it is the ontology of the world, it can generate the visible objects, and it has its own law, which determines the function of the objects.Qi is also time and space, that can push the change of the objects.3. Indentify the meaning and standing of Qi,symbol, objects, substance. Re-thinking about the value of Symbol, proposing the symbol is not fog. Qi is invisible yet it always appear its symbol on objects, symbol can reflects the feature of Qi, in which it is a meaningful unit. The human body has its physiology and pathology symbol.Qi contribute symbol whereas symbol is the classification of Qi. Only in holism we name what we see as Symbol, and call it substance while split into small groups. The symbol consists of substance and determine how it works, the symbol has its own law.4. Analyse the values of Qi generates and determine matter"theory, and emphasize the unique value of treating diseases via Qi level, in which it is the root of the disease.5. Analyse the relationship between holism and isolated partQi is the holism level, in which it determine symbol, and bearing its law, contains its substance. Holism determine parts. Substance forming the objects base on the formular of Qi.Holism is different from isolated parts, some feature appear only in the holism statuse, but substance contains some part of the holism features.By this view, isolated parts will not contradict the holism.6. Chinese medicine takes Qi and western medicine takes substance outline the difference. But Qi as the ontology of life is more closed to lives feature, whereas substance is just consist the body, not generate. The body consist of both Qi and substance, both are importanct, yet we should investigate substance from the views of Qi,by doing so we will creat a new life and nature philosophy views.
