Part I Immunohistochemical Studies of SP, CGRP and VIP in the Nasal Septal Cartilages of the Rats and HumanObjectives: The expressions of substance P(SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide(CGRP) and vasoactive intestinal peptide(VIP) in the nasal septal cartilages of the rats and human were investigated by immunohistochemical methods. Methods: The nasal sepal cartilages of 10 rats and 10 human were immunostained by SABC and SP methods to investigate the expressions of SP, CGRP and VIP respectively, and were stained simultaneously by haematoxylin-and-eosin (HE) method to observe the structures. Results: The nasal septal cartilages of the rats and human were depicted by HE staining as three layers namely prechondroblastic, chondroblastic and hypertrophic layers. The expressions of SP, CGRP and VIP were observed in chondrocytes of all there layers and the matrix of border of prechondroblastic layer for all samples, distributed identically in the nasal septal cartilages. There were no expressions of SP, CGRP and VIP in the matrix of the chondroblastic and hypertrophic layers. Conclusions: The nasal septal cartilage of rat and human could be divided three layers. SP, CGRP and VIP existed in chondrocytes and the matrix of border of prechondroblastic layer for the nasal septal cartilages of the rats and human.
