Background: Allergic rhinitis is one of the most common diseases of ENT, which has a high incidence, complicated pathogenesy, but lack of effective management. It has been found that the neuropeptide plays an important role in the onset and the mechanism of AR. It has been confirmed by clinical experience that allergic rhinitis and deviation of nasal septum always coexistent, and rectification of the nasal septum could relieve the symptom of allergic rhinitis, but the mechanism isn't clear yet. It has been newly found that the cartilage cells have the ability of autocrine and paracrine, and some kinds of neuropeptide have been found in the arthrodial cartilage, as well as in the nasal septum cartilage of human and rat. However, it isn't clear that whether there is neuropeptide in the human nasal septum, and whether it has an impact on AR. As a result, we supposed that there is some kind of neuropeptide in the human nasal septum, and it contributes to the mechanism of AR. The verification of this hypothesis could give new light on the investigation of the mechanism and the management of AR. In this three-part research, we work on the neuropeptide in the nasal septum of the perennial allergic rhinitis patients and the normal controls.Partâ… The investigation for substance P (SP) of nasal septum in the perennial allergicrhinitis patientsObjectives: To investigate the expression of substance P (SP) in the nasal septum of theperennial allergic rhinitis patients. Methods: The levels of SP of the nasal septum of 20 perennial allergic rhinitis patients and25 normal controls were measured by radioimmunoassay. Results: The data of radioimmunoassay were changed into logarithmis value. The SP levelsof the nasal septal cartilages and that of the nasal septal bones in the normal controls groupwere 0.0090902pg and 0.0364707pg, respectively, while in the perennial allergic rhinitispatients group, the data were 0.0206372pg and 0.0272052pg, respectively. In the normalcontrols, the SP level of the nasal septal cartilages was lower than that of the nasal septalbones (P=0.0009<0.01) , while in the perennial allergic rhinitis patients group, there were no statistical significance between the SP levels of the nasal septal cartilages and that of the nasal septal bones (P=0.2184>0.05) .The SP level of the nasal septal cartilages in the perennial allergic rhinitis patients group was higher than that in the normal controls (P=0.0346<0.05) , and there were no statistical significance between SP levels of the nasal septal bones in the two groups (P=0.6726>0.05) .Conclusions: The SP level of the nasal septum in the perennial allergic rhinitis patients was higher than that in the normal controls, which was more obviously in the nasal septal cartilages.Partâ…¡The investigation for vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) of nasal septum in the perennial allergic rhinitis patientsObjectives: To investigate the expression of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in the nasal septum of the perennial allergic rhinitis patients. Methods: The levels of VIP of the nasal septum of 20 perennial allergic rhinitis patients and 25 normal controls were measured by radioimmunoassay. Results: The data of radioimmunoassay were changed into logarithmis value. The VIP levels of the nasal septal cartilages and that of the nasal septal bones in the normal controls group were 0.0004307pg and 0.0061630pg, respectively, while in the perennial allergic rhinitis patients group, the data were 0.0011457pg and 0.0008992pg, respectively. In the normal controls, the VIP level of the nasal septal cartilages was lower than that of the nasal septal bones (P=0.0093<0.01), while in the perennial allergic rhinitis patients group, there were no statistical significance between the VIP levels of the nasal septal cartilages and that of the nasal septal bones (P=0.8817>0.05). The VIP level of the nasal septal cartilages in the perennial allergic rhinitis patients group was higher than that in the normal controls (P=0.0078<0.01), and there were no statistical significance between the VIP levels of the nasal septal bones in the two groups (P=0.8282>0.05) .Conclusions: The VIP level of the nasal septum in the perennial allergic rhinitis patients was higher than that in the normal controls, which was more obviously in the nasal septal cartilages. Partâ…¢The investigation for calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) of nasal septum in the perennial allergic rhinitis patientsObjectives: To investigate the expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in the nasal septum of the perennial allergic rhinitis patients. Methods: The levels of CGRP of the nasal septum of 20 perennial allergic rhinitis patients and 25 normal controls were measured by radioimmunoassay. Results: The data of radioimmunoassay were changed into logarithmis value. The CGRP levels of the nasal septal cartilages and that of the nasal septal bones in the normal controls group were 0.0123874pg and 0.0173541pg, respectively, while in the perennial allergic rhinitis patients group, the data were 0.0235448pg and 0.0118912pg, respectively. In the normal controls, the CGRP level of the nasal septal cartilages was lower than that of the nasal septal bones (P=0.0009<0.01), while in the perennial allergic rhinitis patients group, the CGRP level of the nasal septal cartilages was higher than that of the nasal septal bones (P=0.0439<0.05) . There were no statistical significance between the CGRP levels of the nasal septal cartilages in the two groups (P=0.2987>0.05) , neither did that of the nasal septal bones in the two groups (P=0.7233>0.05) .Conclusions: There were no statistical significance between the CGRP levels of the nasal septum in the perennial allergic rhinitis patients and the normal controls.
