In the middle period of 1980s, the scholar of the Soviet Union discovered that besides the health and disease conditions there was an edge condition between the health and disease that was sub-health condition. From then on, a great deal of the researches have been taken on the sub-health condition, and brought many methods for prevention and treatment. We made an investigation on the people in sub-health condition by using the method of epidemiology and analyzed the conception, impact factors, symptom and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome of the sub-health condition. We also concluded the working experience in carrying out large-sample epidemiological research in TCM syndrome.Results:1. We constituted the diagnostic criteria of the sub-health condition for our research: repetitively feel uncomfortable continually for more than three months, without specific disease diagnosis or the disease has no correlation to the uncomfortable.2. We constituted the epidemiological investigation questionnaire in TCM syndrome for sub-health condition. The results of the epidemiological investigation and the data analysis indicate that the questionnaire is credible and effective.3. We investigated the social life condition, dietary habit, personality and unhealthy habits of people in sub-health condition and concluded the relative risk factors.4. The clinical characteristics of the sub-health condition are chest discomfort, shortness of breath, eyestrain, giddiness, dizziness, residual urine, frequent nocturnal urination, limpness, feverish sensation in the palms and soles, cool sensation in the stomach.5. The main TCM syndromes are liver-kidney yin-deficiency, heart-liver blood-deficiency, heart-kidney disharmony, liver-qi stagnation, heart-qi deficiency, liver-yang hyperactivity, heart-spleen deficiency, liver-yin deficiency, spleen-qi deficiency, kidney-yi deficiency, liver-fire hyperactivity, kidney-yang deficiency, heart-yin deficiency.6. We concluded the experience and established the operational model in carrying out large-sample epidemiological research in TCM syndrome. This model provides the scientific and effective technical platform for clinical research in TCM.
