Being disability of cell division, mature neurons can not proliferate tosubstitute lost cells after the injury of spinal cord and peripheral nerves. So, nerve repair is still a challenge for neuroscientists. Heretofore, transplantation of some materials including Schwann cells, olfactory tract, peripheral nerve and embryonic nerve tissues have been applied to repair injured spinal cord or peripheral nerves. Although achievement has been procured, the deficient graft resource and disability to produce novel functional neurons limit further study and clinical application. Discovery of stem cells bring a new therapeutic strategy to repair nervous system after trauma.Bone marrow stromal cells(BMSCs), obtained from postnatal bone marrow, contain progenitors able to differentiated into several mesenchymal lineages, but can also differentiate into non-mesenchymal cells, i.e. neural cells in vitro and in vivo under appropriate conditions. Unlike hematopoietic cells, BMSCs can be operationally difined by their ability to adhere to plastic surfaces. BMSCs are an ideal candidate for therapeutic applications since they are relatively easy to harvest, easily expandable in vitro, and can be isolated from adult bone marrow still retaining their differentiation potential. Several reports have demonstrated that BMSCs could be a non-embryonic or non-fetal source of stem cells suitable for cell replacement strategies in the treatment of neural disorders.Until recently, most application studies of neural stem cells focused on repair of central nervous system (CNS) diseases, while the usage of BMSCs on peripheral neural injury were rarely reported. Moreover, the host usually must be executed in order to track the survival, migration, differentiation and incorporation of graft, which...
