One hundred seventy nine Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were used in the present research work. It consists of the following 4 parts,1. The ultrastructure of the ventrolateral subdivision of the periaqueductal gray and the distributions of 14 neurotransmitters in it Immunocytochemical technique was used to study the distributions of the immunoreactive structures of 14 neurotransmiters in the midbrain periaque-ductal gray (PAG) and the normal and immunoreactive ultrastructures of the ventrolateral subdivision (VL) of PAG were analysed under electron microscope,1.1. The ultrastructure of VL of PAGMost of the neurons were medium sized fusiform cells. Their nuclei were ellipsoid and the nuclear membrane was irregular with the prescence of deep invaginations projecting into the karyoplasm. The nucleolus was dense, large, spheroidal and clear. There were many kinds of organelles in the cytoplasm and some of th Golgi apratuses were circular or semicircular.
