In the recent years, the research focus on Chinese Traditional Medicine (TCM) is becoming more and more popular in medicine field. Prescriptions are the main form of TCM. Theory of compatibility is the essential part of TCM. In this paper, the changes of chemical components, the changes of pharmacological activities, and the effective compounds in Fufang Danshen were studied.A stable, reliable, uniform HPLC analytical method with good reproducibility was developed in the second chapter to study the changes of chemical ingredients between single herbs of Salvia miltiorrhizae (SM), Panax notoginseng (PN) and their prescription-Fufang Danshen (FFDS). The results indicated that in the 48 peaks of FFDS, there are 24 peaks contributed from SM,10 peaks contributed from PN, and 14 peaks co-contributed from SM and PN, but no new peaks produced. Comparing FFDS with single herbs of SM and PN, the areas of 19 peaks are increased; while the areas of 6 peaks are decreased. The influence of different compatible ratios of SM to PN in FFDS, different fractions of SM and PN extracted with different solvent, different compatible ratios of effective fractions of SM to effective fractions of PN in FFDS on pharmacological activity were investigated in the third chapter. The results indicated that different ratios of SM to PN in FFDS have different pharmacological activity; different fractions also have different pharmacological activity; and the effective ratios of effectual fractions of SM to effectual fractions of PN are wider than those of SM to PN.
