The crude extract (code No.513) of Tripterygium wilfordii (T.W.) was ur.ed in treating eczema-dermatitis in a double-blind controlled study. Fifty-one patients were divided into group A or B in randomized order. Patients of group A were given "513" 2 pills t.i.d. or q.i.d. orally for one week, and patients of group B were given placebo 2 pills t.i.d. or (?). i.d orally for oneweek.There were 24 cases in group A, clinical response of 9 cases were excellent, 5 were good, and 3 were favorable. The cure rate was 37.5%(9/24) and response rate was 70.8%(17/24). In 27 cases of group (?), clinical response of 7 cases were favorable and 20 were poor. Results of Ridit analysis showed that there was a very signficant clinical improvement ( P<0.001) in patients treated with "513". No side effects of "513" were observed in this study.
