It is widely accepted that the patients with positive surgical margin(s) will practice a rather poor prognosis comparing with those of negative ones largely because of high risk of local recurrence. In fact, even in the patients with so called negative surgical margins examined with the routine pathologic methods, about half of them also suffer from the problem. In order to minimize the danger of recurrence treated after operation, IHC (immunohistochemistry)for p16 and p53 ,which play a very important role in carcinogenesis, are exercised with a purpose of some more insight into the so called negative surgical margins. A number of 100 patients from the Head and Neck Department in our hospital from 1980 to 1992 were included in this study. Among them 52 cases were ones with recurrence, and the remainder was selected as a control group, in which a follow-up for a period of at least five years was available in every case. The major objective of this study was to evaluate a number of parameters to establish their relative prognostic values in predicting local recurrence and regional or distant metastasis. The presence or absence of staining and depth of color were noted when the results were evaluated. Multiple variables included in our study have been analyzed. This analysis of multiple clinical and histologic parameters demonstrated that...
