Ganoderma (Lingzhi) is a famous traditional Chinese herb with long history in China as a valuable tonic remedy. A vast number of different active chemical entities have been documented in Ganoderma in recent years, including triterpenes , steroids, nucleosides, polysaccharides and etc.. Various pharmacological activities of this herbal and the mechanisms underlying these activities have been elucidated recently. To date, experimental data suggested that Ganoderma has antitumor, antiradiation , scavenge of radical , immunomodulatory, antihypertension , hepatoprotective , hypocholesterolemic , hypoglycemic, calmative , antiasthma activities. Ganoderma has been used to prevent or treat chronic bronchitis, asthma, coronary heart disease, hypertriglyceridemia, neurasthenic, insomnia, hepatitis, diabetes, cancer in clinic. In recent years we isolated a new polysaccharide from wood-cultured Ganoderma lucidum (Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide, GL-PS ) with molecular weight 584900. A series of experiments demonstrated that this polysaccharide had notable hypoglycemic, free radical scavenging, antitumor, immunomodulatory activities. Administration of GL-PS reduced the serum glucose level significantly in...
