The treatment of fractures remains a challange. It is unlikely that bone repair is regulated by individual growth factors acting independently of each other. BMP, an effective bone inducer, and bFGF, an angiogenic growth factor are all bone growth factors. The callus is probably a target tissue for both BMP and bFGF.Understanding the regulation of fracture repaire by these factors thus requires an investigation of their combined effects. The current study was undertaken, including (1) To investigate the distribution of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) immunoreactivity in rabbit radius fracture callus. The results showed that callus of normally healed was instensively stained, while in that of nonunion was negative immunoreactivity. The experiments suggest that the weaked expression of BMP and bFGF in the callus of early period after fracture may be one of the causes of nonunion. Fracture healing may be promoted by exogenous growth factors. (2) The effect of a composite of bBMP and rhbFGF, mixed with PVP as a carrier, on the healing of segmental defects in the rabbit radii or inducing ectopic...
