HuangYi (hao Xiaosong)(1744--1802).Famousscholar and expert in the Studies of Bronzes and Stones.He has perfectly combined his achievements in theresearch of Bronzes and Stones with his personal artisticcreations,and has always been a successful practitioner ofincorporating the techniques in Bronzes-and-Stones andthe skills in calligraphy into his practice of seal cuttingand painting.As a knowledgeable and observant scholar,Huang Yi and the kindred spirits have made a significantbreakthrough in the Studies of Bronzes and Stones andpromoted the further improvement and systematization ofthe related disciplines.In this thesis,I have been exploring Huang Yi’sachievements in the investigation of ancient tablets,hissocial association between friends and their discussionsin academic issues,therefore,I will be able to analyzeobjectively the social and academic environment in thatperiod.In this paper,I will discuss the subject mainlyfrom two aspects--firstly,his activities in investigatingthe ancient tablets and the related writings;secondly,hisacquaintances with numerous wise men for their commonpursuit,such as Weng Fanggang,Bi Yuan,Ruan Yuan,Wang Chang,Wu Yi,Zhao Wei,Gui Fu.They exchangedopinions aud ideas with one another,taking the advantageof the teaching-learning to promote each other.Therefore,from different angles,we will gradually understand HuangYi--the humanist and artist with profound learning andmeticulous scholarship.In the Qianlong Period and Jiaqing Period,Textology was in its heyday,which had gained great achievements inacademic research.Huang Yi was an outstanding scholarin the Studies of Bronzes and Stones.On the basis ofthis historical background,this thesis made a detailedstudy of his social activities,academic achievements andartistic accomplishments.Therefore,it will deepen ourunderstanding of academic tendency and the changes ofsocial aesthetics in the middle of the Qing Dynasty tomake up for the academic blankness in this respect.
