National ideology as a significant part of superstructure theoretically supports the fundamental political and economic system and leads, dominates and regulates other sorts of social consciousness. After the disintegration of Soviet Union, Russia steps into the road of national transformation and once opposes national ideology as the symbol of tyranny. Diverse thought plus the lack of national ideology results in the deep crisis of national identity and basic values. During the later presidency of Boris Yeltsin, the construction of "thought of ethnic Russians" as a political task has been put on the agenda. When Putin has become President, Russia consciously cognizes, practically explores and rationally thinks the construction of ideology and forms the relatively complete ideological system of "Putinism". "Putinism" has played a key role in maintaining the social stability and national unity, promoting the economic progress and diplomatic independence and recovering the powerful image and great-power status of Russia. There are rare and scattered researches, domestic and international, directly focusing on Russian ideology at present. The construction of Russian ideology has been changing and there are few latest research results on it. The subject of the essay is the Russian ideology in the transformation period and four key questions has been selected and researched:Firstly, to classify the historical change of Russian ideology in transformation period; secondly, to analyze theoretical framework, basic connotation and the essence of the ideology of Putinism; thirdly, to reveal the multiple interactive relationship between Russian ideology and realistic politics, economy and diplomacy; finally, to discuss the inner logic and specific way of how Russia controls the ideology. The basic structure of the essay is based on the four aspects mentioned above. The first chapter summarizes concepts of ideology and related Marxist theory so as to provide a comparatively clear precondition for related researches. The second chapter describes the historical background and realistic basis of the development of Russian ideology. The third chapter classifies and analyzes the four historical stages of the development of Russian ideology in transformation period. The fourth chapter discusses theoretical framework, basic connotation and the essence of the ideology of Putinism. The fifth chapter shows the theory, realistic and behavioral logic and specific way of how Russia controls the ideology. The sixth chapter demonstrates the influence of Russian ideology on social transformation. Finally, problems and challenges confronted in the construction of Russian ideology are discussed in the chapter seven. At the end of the essay, there is a review of the development of Russian ideology in transformation period, a summary of the general law of construction of Russian ideology which offers reference to the ideology construction of countries in transformation period, and a rational prediction about the future development of Russian ideology.
