Mediocrity Of The University

Since the 20th century, the popularization of high education has brought about the unprecedented booming, but it also suffered the increasing crisis. The education legitimacy which is based on the production and dissemination of profound knowledge may collapse. The quality reduction of high education, the lost of virtue and the declining of outstanding sprits, all these can be the focus of public criticism to our universities. More and more universities grow up, while more and more dissatisfactions appear. It is proved again our universities have many worrying problems both in idea and in practice, in spite that so many efforts have been made to meet the social needs. Against that backdrop, this paper is a research based on University Mediocrity, starts from the worry of modern university, hinges around the current situation of university mediocrity in the view of Times Thought. This thesis follows the principle of the unity of history and logic, and uses the horizontal analysis and vertical analysis to demonstrate those problems.It is a mediocre age in which material progress may receive high praise meanwhile the spiritual value may be neglected. All the things about thoughts are being mediocre. No mind is being an ordinary state. Our university is heavily influenced by the sprit dross of our time, and is face of the double crisis in idea and in practice. The declining of outstanding sprits with the dropout of college education is a problem hard to avoid. The popularization of high education, rather than the elite education means the lost of outstanding virtue. In our time, the university is toward mediocrity. One the one hand, the classical outstanding sprit is missing; on the other hand, the modern university’s elite education has no good results. University mediocrity does not exist in isolation, as well as the other two:the lost of good man and the confusion of humanity. They are both cause and effect. During this mediocrity age, university mediocrity is inevitable because of its contemporary setting. The outstanding sprit of university reminds that the university cannot be the victim of mediocre time. We cannot regard university mediocrity as common. Modern university should try to surpass mediocrity and call back outstanding to lead the trend of the times and gives a human ultimate concern. In this way, the real high education can come into being.As a theoretical research, this thesis is aimed at reflecting university mediocrity and seeking for excellence rather than finding a way to help the university out. The university is labeled with society and times. Our universities are pulling ahead between good and evil. Our universities cannot be accepted as the excellence without a soul in the tidal wave of the mediocrity. Not only should we know the times limitation of university, but also realize the significance of the times and the university from a reflective perspective. As a product of the age, universities meet the new requirements and show us its rational existence and development. It’s not to knock down the advantage and rationality of university. We discuss and even criticize university mediocrity, aiming at recalling the college education, humanistic spirit, and outstanding tradition, objecting to seeking for top scientific research blindly. Classical reviewing is not the only way to avoid university mediocrity. But the classical tradition has the outstanding ideas which works for leading modern university and keeping our university on the right track.In conclusion, from such a point the worrying of university, this thesis introduces the thinking of university mediocrity. Then it will analyze its main problems and reasons. At last it will find out the non-mediocrity ways by means of learning from the classical thoughts to provide the theoretical reference and support for the outstanding of modern university.
