Spatial knowledge spillovers active role in shortening the gap with the developed areasand achieving leaping development has been recognized gradually by the academia andgovernment departments. This paper re-exames spatial knowledge spillovers effects underthe background of regional economic sustainable development with case study, andprovides policy suggestions. The main contents are as follows.(1) Analysis of the Chinese regional economic sustainable development.39coreindicators about6aspects covering ecological environment, resource use, economic level, social development, science and technology progress and development ability areestablished. Principal component analysis is introduced to evaluate conditions for regionaleconomic sustainable development with panel data from2005to2011. The results showthat provinces and municipalities have maintained a good economic sustainabledevelopment momentum since2007. Therefore, it is reasonable to study spatial knowledgespillovers under regional economic sustainable development perspective.(2) Theoretical analysis of General Spatial Knowledge Spillovers Model. Taking intoaccount the role of knowledge spillovers hinder suffered, knowledge spillovers impedancefunction is introduced into the Cani ls model. The general form of spatial knowledgespillovers model is deduced based on the principle of maximum entropy. Considering thefactors of regional economic sustainable development, the knowledge spillovers impedancefunction is defined, and the general spatial knowledge spillovers model under regionaleconomic sustainable development perspective (which can be called revised model relativeto the Cani ls model) is obtained. Dynamic analysis is carried out from the angles ofknowledge stock gap, knowledge spillovers impedance function and so on.(3) Empirical analysis on the panel data of31provinces for the revised model. Firstly, the knowledge stock gap is measured according to the evaluation index system, and theindex weight is determined by information entropy method. Secondly, the learning ability ismeasured. Thirdly, the knowledge spillovers impedance is measured. Finally, the spatialknowledge spillovers effect of the revised model is calculated, and the validity test is doneas well. The empirical results show that spatial knowledge spillovers effects of Jiangsu,Beijing, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Shanghai and Shandong are obviously more outstandingthan the effects in other regions. Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta have increasingly evident leading role, while the Bohai Sea leading role is weakening. Comparedwith the Cani ls model, the revised model results are more reasonable.(4) Suggestions are proposed from the aspects of strengthening the spatial knowledgespillovers effects and effectively responding to the negative impacts of knowledgespillovers. In the context of regional economic sustainable development, the paper revised themodel of Cani ls spatial knowledge spillovers with empirical research. The research has apositive theoretical and practical significance to enrich the spatial knowledge spilloversresearch, to promote the regional economic sustainable development, and to respondeffectively to the negative impacts of spatial knowledge spillovers.
