Since2005, the growth speed gap between Henan province and the central region has been wideningfurther, in the rearrangement process of China’s industry in the three regions. When growth gap in Henanprovince and the central regions was decomposed according to industry,60%of it was from manufacturinggrowth gap and18%is the result of the third industry growth gap. In order to clarify the cause of thewidening gap between Henan province and the central region in the manufacturing industry and the tertiarysector, this paper investigated into the economic growth of Henan province for a longer time span.Twopuzzling problems emerged: First, before2007the manufacturing industry in Henan province is far morequickly than the central region both in size and growth rate. However,after2007, the growth gap has beensuddenly widening further; Second, the factor leading to the long-term lagging of Henan tertiary industry isthe fact that Henan’s economic activities are not urban agglomerative. It is in stark contrast with what ismentioned in the new economic geography that the largest space characteristic of economic activities, inany space dimension, is agglomeration state. Sorting literature on domestic industry transfer and industryagglomeration, literature studying reconstruction mechanism of provincial level is rare, let alone literatureon urban inagglomeration of some provinces’ economic activities. However, it is impossible to bypass theabove two questions when study economic problems in Henan province. For this reason, this paper sortedall provinces (municipalities)202digits manufacturing data as well as the relevant data of more than280cities, since1999.By the quantitative analysis and quantitative regression research, this paper found: first,since2004, the manufacturing industry of eastern region as a whole shows a tendency of reconstructing tothe central and western regions. However, before2007, there are only Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai andGuangdong where industrial space reconstruction actually emerged. After2007, industrial spacereconstruction came to being in Zhejiang province, while other eastern provinces had no this phenomenonyet. Under the influence of industrial space reconstruction’s adjacent effect, only the Midwest provincesadjacent to the provinces (municipalities) where industrial space reconstruction emerged were affected bythis, and accelerated growth picked up in the manufacturing industry. The Midwest provinces far awayfrom the space reconstruction provinces (municipalities) had no obvious change in the manufacturing industry growth speed; Second, in Henan province,80%of the leading industries belong to the scatteredlayout industries at the provincial level. This type of industries would be affected by the spatial propertiesof itself when a province’s economy develops to a certain advanced level, and the further developmentspace would be limited. The above two reasons jointly caused that, under the condition that the scale ofmanufacturing industry in Henan province is greater than other central provinces. However, after2007,manufacturing growth gap has been widening further; Third, Henan’s economic space structure thateconomic activities are mainly distributed in the county and county under the regional not only influencethe development of the tertiary industry, But also made Henan is facing with more complicated situationthan other provinces on the problems of urbanization. Quantitative regression analysis of urbaninagglomeration of economic activities in Henan province showed that Henan industry that was mainlymade up by agricultural and sideline products processing industry and non-metallic mineral productsindustry was the main cause of urban inagglomeration of Henan economic activities. It is not a validationof spatial economy theory, but a verification of the theory that degree of economic agglomeration isinfluenced by industrial externalities in small geographic space.
