The regeneration of waterfront can significantly boost the development of a metropolis and the relevant practice which originated from developed countries has spread to the whole world. In the regeneration process, the function of waterfront in metropolises has gradually changed from production to consumption and recreationalization has become an inevitable trend. It’s more adoptable to regenerate the recreation of a metropolis, in which waterfront is scarce and publicly open and outlines the city’s space development. The aim is to enhance its comprehensive soft power, narrow the gap between people and promote coexistence of people. In spite of various importance attached to it at different stages and whatever orientation recreation regeneration was given initially, positive or negative, practices indicate that it is almost indispensible to regenerate the recreation for the development of waterfront in a metropolis. Nevertheless, there is relatively scarce deep research in recreation regeneration and many problems have arisen in the process. Consequently, it’s necessary to make a systematic discussion about recreation regeneration of waterfront in metropolises.Based on relevant research of both home and abroad, this dissertation is aimed to study recreation regeneration of waterfront in metropolises from three perspectives: theory, illustrations and countermeasure. Comparing with previous studies, the present dissertation highlights itself in the following aspects:(1) Given it is necessary to optimize and improve the theory of recreation regeneration of waterfront, this dissertation mainly discusses the relationship between regeneration of waterfront and development of metropolises and further expounds the reasonableness of recreation as the trend of regeneration of waterfront in metropolises. It is found through reviewing literature that regeneration of waterfront is conducive to the comprehensive promotion of multilevel functions of metropolises. Nevertheless, practice of the regeneration is confronted with three major plights:severe profit-oriented objective, insufficient sustainability of the regeneration’s duplicate spreading and splitting social relationship. Besides, similar predicaments also have seriously restrained effectiveness of the overall impact of waterfront. And the reason can be largely blamed to the dislocation of the relation between waterfront and a metropolis. It is advisable to solve the problem as making the relation between the two from splitting to coexistent and from single-function to multi-function. Meanwhile, the analysis result indicates that the function of recreation affects a metropolis greatly in optimizing people’s living environment, promoting its vigor and optimizing space and industrial structure, etc. Relevant practices in United States, Europe, Japan and other countries have proved that recreation regeneration of waterfront has internal compatibility with city’s development in the process of establishing its recreation function. Moreover, the research result also shows that the trend has something to do with the transformation of social economy in leisure times, spatial attribute of waterfront, resource itself, game among stakeholders and relevant laws and regulations.(2) On the account of the differences in the course of waterfront’s regeneration and development of recreation, this dissertation makes a case study to compare the Thames in London with that of the Huangpu River in Shanghai in their development of recreation so as to lay a foundation for deeply discovering the mechanism of recreation development of waterfront in metropolises. In order to have a deep analysis, this dissertation lists in detail the history of both metropolises and their waterfront, their regeneration process of the waterfront and their performance of recreation regeneration of waterfront. The research result shows that there is significant difference between London and Shanghai, in the process of recreation regeneration, in course, rhythm, composition of gamers and integration of waterfront and the city.In terms of the course of regeneration, the Thames is in accordance with London while the condition in Shanghai is relatively different; In terms of the rhythm, recreation regeneration of the Thames is gradual while Shanghai is fast; For the composition of gamers, the Thames demonstrates pluralistic feature while there are limited participants in Shanghai’s case. As for the integration of waterfront and the city, gradual development of the Thames waterfront fits that of London well, nevertheless, it is far from fitness in Shanghai’s case.(3) Through the above theoretical analysis and the comparison between the two metropolises, the dissertation concludes the core links of the recreation regeneration mechanism of waterfront in metropolises and puts forward suggestion of principles for sequential regeneration. The core links mainly are:specific strategic vision for recreation regeneration of waterfront in metropolises, pluralistic stakeholders and the control of gradual development and all of these are inseparable. For the potential waterfront in metropolises, recreation-orientation should be insisted on and a control system which contains the three core links should be set up. Furthermore, specific organizations which have state-back, independent supervisory bodies and a series of regulations should be set up to make sure of the continuity, ordering and effectiveness of the regeneration of waterfront.
