| Due to the constraint of natural conditions, social conditions, economic development and technical accumulation of particular area on the regional innovation, innovation activities will inevitably start from a different point with different content in various ways. Innovation modes in any region are all under certain constraints, and successful ones certainly are both practical and following the trend of times. Besides, ways and means of innovation differ significantly, so it is of great significance to explore suitable innovation modes in regional development. The thesis finds out the advantages and existing problems of regional innovation through elaboration of particular phenomena and in-depth analysis of various factors affecting regional innovation modes, provides basis and foundation for selection of modes through research on regional innovation rules, and provides guidance and reference for regional innovation mode selection through research on innovation activities of world’s leading economies and the provinces in China. Main research work are as follows:(1) Through sorting out the research status and related theories and methods and defining the content and basic elements of regional innovation, this paper holds that regional innovation mode is a way to realize the goal of innovation on the basis of regional resources endowment with overall consideration of temporal-spatial characters of regional innovation. There are four parts in the analyzing: "innovation mode and mode selection", "contributory factors", "subjective factors" and "regional innovation milieu", providing methods and thoughts and analysis basis for regional innovation mode research.(2) In this paper, as for characteristic analysis in the dimensionalities of time, the time evolution of regional innovation is characterized by regional economic development, regional innovation intensity and intensity growth rate. It shows that innovation intensity increases with economic growth in logarithm way, while intensity growth rate decreases logarithmically as intensity increases. In order to analyze regional innovation characters in dimensionalities of time, the paper builds up a comprehensive evaluation model for the time evolution characteristics of regional innovation.(3) It is revealed in this paper that the essence of spatial evolution of regional innovation is spatial states transferring of innovation activities, including innovation clustering of the internal region and innovation spillovers between regions. With the data from typical countries and regions, this thesis induces characteristics of space gathering and U-shaped curve evolution of innovation ability and mechanism of regional innovation spatial spillovers, and establishes a synthetic measure model of regional innovation spatial including intra-regional clustering and inter-regional spillover based on the above two aspects.(4) Firstly, an index measuring model of regional innovation resource including human, financial, material and information resources is established. Then, a time-space-resource-based three-dimensional model of regional innovation mode selection is built up on the basis of characteristic analysis of time and spatial evolution of regional innovation. Next, according to the comprehensive evaluation index of innovation, regional innovation is divided into the following several modes:endogenous innovation, endogenous-imported innovation, balanced innovation, imported-endogenous innovation and imported innovation. Finally, in the light of dominant relationships in regional innovation, there are three main types, namely government-led, enterprise-led and government-enterprise dual-led innovation, establishing a binary classification system of regional innovation modes.(5) With the judgement method of three-dimension composite index and dominant type, the paper carries out empirical study on regional innovation characteristics and mode selection in various regions of China. It turned out that the regional innovation modes in 31 regions are categorized as government-led endogenous, balanced and imported innovation mode, enterprise-led endogenous-imported, balanced and imported-endogenous innovation mode, and government-enterprise dual-led imported-endogenous innovation mode. This thesis also puts forward related solutions and proposals for problems in innovation development of various regions.
