Driven by economic globalization and rapid development of high and new technology which is represented by digital network technology, various kinds of emerging businesses are springing up constantly. Overviewing developments of these new businesses, it can be found that business model plays an extremely important role in it. Therefore, since entering the new century, construction, remodeling or innovation of business model has not only become an important research problem in the field of strategic management and organization innovation, but also got high attention from international community, especially developed countries. Whether it is construction, remodeling or innovation, it involves a fundamental problem-systemic evaluation of business model. If we can’t evaluate business model scientifically, then all actions against business models, including improvement, remodeling and innovation, will become a high-risk, unmanageable and random process. For this, a large number of explorations have been carried out in academia, but in general, these evaluation methods have some obvious weaknesses: First, the definition of business model is fuzzy and not unified, and some evaluations lack basic theory support. Currently existing assessments basically adopt the method of index assessment, but most indexes lack selective basis, and logical relationships between indexes often tend to be obscure; Second, the evaluation systems and paths are very casual with low accuracy and reliability; third, evaluation of business model is disjointed with improvement and innovation. The evaluating conclusion cannot provide convincing supports for business model’s improvement and innovation and enterprise’s strategic adjustment. According to this phenomenon, this article explores a structured path of business model performance evaluation on the basis of container model.In this paper, although the functions of the business model are explicit, which provides a particular sub-industry operating environment in favor of its own management for enterprise operation, but the degrees of the realization of functions mentioned above by specific business models are different, on account of the particular structure attributes of different specific business models. These differences result that the extent of benefits for enterprise operation brought by specific business models are diverse from each other, varying from very excellence to very poor. So this paper proposes a specific concept of ’Business Model Performance’, which is defined as the degree of the realization of theoretical functions by specific business models. On the basis of the container model theory (Li Dong et al.,2010), this paper proposes and verifies business model performance evaluation methods based on rules analysis. The main contents of this paper are as follows:Firstly, it proposes the issue of base material of business model constitution. This paper pointed out that although business model can be understood as a mode of activities to create value for customers and capture value for enterprises from the perspective of the design and constitution, but from the perspective of structure which supports business models’ functions, the business model is depend on a set of specific rules to guarantee the repeatable implementation of two types of activity mode mentioned above. Therefore, the evaluation of business model performance must be based on rules analysis.Secondly, it proposes the measurement logic of business model performance’s volume. Business models can develop a new particular sub-industry operating environment for future operation of enterprises, and for enterprises, this environment cultivates certain value potential, or supports a specific space of profit potential. On the one hand, the performance of business model depends on its structural features; on the other hand, it depends on the size of this space. In this paper, the concept of business model volume is used to describe the size of this value space. Thirdly, it proposes the mechanism and the empirical test methods on business model constitutive rules impacting volume above. In this paper, business model volume decided by area size of each functional plate in business model is not the only factor of eventually effecting business model volume. Leakage phenomenon happens because of competitive imitation and poor match between plates in reality, that is to say, although there is rationality and advancement existed in customer value creating ways and enterprise value capturing ways reflected in business model, these ways cannot fully realized or sustainable realized if there exists defections in the rules supporting these ways. In this way, the value space formed by business model container will lead to value loss because of leakage, making actual business model capacity of which internal performance suffering loss.Fourthly, it proposes an overall route of analysis and evaluation on business model constitutive rules, including rules extraction, attribute analysis and evaluation of rules system’s intensity. Adaptation degree test of corresponding SEM measurement model shows that the proposed indexes of rules system’s intensity are reasonable and feasible.Fifthly, it proposes two constructs; business model capacity attribute and material attribute which serve as the two structural characteristics impressing business model performance, and puts forward the measurement indicator of the two potential variables. At the same time, the two constructs of performance sustainable level and stakeholder identification level which describe business model performance is put forward in this paper. On this basis, it designs and examines structural equation model inspecting business model performance by choosing 349 enterprises in strategy emerging industries as samples.The results of empirical analysis show that attributes of business model component, such as CVP and the solutions of customer problems, exert influence on the volume of business model. Exclusive and sustainable level of rules will impact on material attributes of business model indeed, thereby affecting the volume of the business model, which is its performance status.The empirical analysis conclusions obtained by the paper can apply in three aspects. Firstly, it benefits enterprises conducting systematic and comprehensive analysis and evaluation of its business model performance in different stages, and improve and rebuild targeted models. Secondly, it can assist investment organization particularly strategic investors to evaluate the business model of target enterprise more scientifically and systematically, to improve investment decisions quality significantly. Thirdly, it can help government and the theoretical circle analyzing and judging business model internal attribute and development trend on emerging business more safely, to support relevant policy optimization or practice guidance.
