This study is one of the studies about small tall buildings subsidized byShanghai Commission of Constucture.Special-shaped columns are RC columns with T-shaped,L-shaped,+-shaped and Z-shaped.The ratio between sections length with width is notbeyond 4.These members are used in housing buildings whose stories arenot beyond 7.The ratio of members in the small tall buildings with l0~l5stories is often beyond 4.Special-shaped columns with ratio 5,6,7,8 is calledshort-leg shear walls.In this paper,the member with ratio beyond 4 is calledbroad-limb special-shaped column.Special-shaped columns frame is peculiar structure in ourcountry.Special-shaped columns used in multistored structure are studiedalready.It is the first time to study broad-limb special-shaped columns inourcountry.Some results are adoptted in the suggestive manuscript ── ShanghaiRC short-leg wall structure regulationsBroad-limb special-shaped columns are transition members withspecific properties between columns and shear walls.In this paper,throughthe analysis of the low-cyclic loading experiment,the failure principles arerevealed,the ductility and ultimate bearing capacity are discussed,and thevaluable results are achieved.All of these provide the reliable basis for thesmall tall buildings with special-shaped columns.The following work isdone:l. Through the low-cyclic loading experiments of 24 broad-limbspecial-shaped columns with 1/2 reduced ratio,the membersWhOle falure processes from elasticstage,crack stage,to failure areobservedgud the boUs failuer forms of broad-limb special-shaPed colunm are exPOsed.2. The non-symmetry of broad-limb special-shaPed columns isanalysed.The influencement of non-symmetry to structuredesign is POint out.3. The load-bearing ultimatCcaPacity of broad-limb special-shaPedcolumns is studied.TWo conceptions are advanced:free membersand members in structure.The essential distinctiond between freespecial-shaPed columns and special-shaPed colunms in structUreare discussed.4. Oblique section ultimatC caPacity of broad-limb special-shaPedcolumns is discussed by truss model.The influcement of thefianges to the shear caPacity can not be ignored.5. The aseisemic behavior of broad-limb special-shaPed is studiedby energy formulations.The energy dissipation is analysed.Themeasure to imPrve nonsymmetry of ductility is suggested.
