Research Of The Xie Clan In Qimen And Their Documents And Files During The Ming And Qing Dynasties

Huizhou Documents and Files is now considered as the fifth new discovery in original historical research materials since the discoveries of Jiaguwen (inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells of the Shang Dynasty), Jiandu of Han-jin Dynasties (inscriptions on bamboo slips or books copied on silks), Dunhuang Books and Records, as well as Official Archives of Ming-Qing Dynasties. The discovery of Huizhou Documents and Files has provided researchers with new fields and ideas, and helps to generate Hui Culture. Now it's playing an important role in historical researches, and its value is gaining acknowledgement among researchers. The Xie clan in Qimen, which moved to Qimen in Nantang Dynasty, lasts for almost a thousand year until now. The Xie clan has experienced its formation, development, prosperity, and decline, and has left many documents. This thesis mainly takes the Documents and Files left by the Xie clan in Qimen as the research subject, adopts documental archives and historical records, systematically analyzes formation of the Xie clan in Qimen, its expansion, economy, education and social relationships, and illustrates the effects of the social changes during Ming-Qing Dynasty to the Xie clan in Qimen.This thesis is constituted of two parts, introduction and the main body.In the introduction part, the thesis illustrates the origin of this thesis, the status quo of Huizhou Documents and Files research at home and abroad, researches of Huizhou Documents and Files and economy, researches of Huizhou Documents and Files and education, and researches of Huizhou Documents and Files and clan, and gives out definitions to some concepts involved in this thesis.The main body of the thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter cleans up the left Documents and Files by the Xie clan in Qimen. According to the content, the left Documents and Files by Xie clan in Qimen can be classified into seven types. This chapter also generalizes the features of the left Documents and Files by Xie clan in Qimen, and analyzes the reason why these Documents and Files can be saved. The second chapter starts with the documents and files, discusses the formation and development of the Xie clan in Qimen. According to the Documents and Files of the Xie clan in Qimen and some historical records, this chapter elaborates on the surname of Xie clan, researches on the identity and extraction of the Xie clan's ancestor-Xie Quan, analyzes the formation, development and expansion of the Xie clan in Qimen in details, and tries to find out the basic laws for clan development. The third chapter starts with the documents and files, and mainly analyzes the education of the Xie clan in Qimen. The Xie clan in Qimen paid great attention to the education of its clansmen, and created good educational atmosphere and material situation for their education. For many generations, many of its clansmen had succeeded in imperial examinations and left a large amount of academic achievement and materials. The fourth chapter starts with the documents and files, mainly analyzes the income and property path of the Xie clan in Qimen, and discusses the land revenue, business revenue, and accumulation of clan's property. The fifth chapter starts with the documents and files, and mainly analyzes the social relationships of the Xie clan in Qimen. This chapter discusses the inner relationships of the Xie clan from its management, heritage, mutual assistance and the tenant servant system, discusses the social status of the Xie clan from its support to local public welfare establishments and cooperation with other neighboring clans, and discusses its relationship with the country from the national tax and corvee. The almost a thousand year history of the Xie clan in Qimen has been connected with the ancient Chinese society, resembles the development courses of the small and medium clans in Huizhou area. The development and changes of the Xie clan in Qimen can specifically reflect the development and changes of ancient Chinese society in individual clan.
