As for Chinese traditional painting, the color selection is a key element in the conception and one of the key factors for the final effect.Ancient Painters has accumulated rich experience in the use of pigments. But a lot of use and production methods have been lost in the mists of the past, and future generations of painters do not know the condition of pigments at that time. Application in pigments which has been passed down is a very small proportion of the total. Therefore, it is very necessary to make a systematic collation and research. The pre-Qin and Han Dynasties, as a source of usage of Chinese painting pigments, are the starting point for later research as well as the important periods of the formation and development of Chinese Heavy Color Painting, and pigments'study of those periods is the foundation of systematic study on ancient pigments.The research methods base on mutual proof of ancient literature and archaeological finds, since each of them has advantages and disadvantages in the research aspects, they should be combined and referred to one another and brought into mutual complementation in order to construct the systematic knowledge structure of the pre-Qin and Han Dynasties.According to the archaeological discovery, there are 22 species of pigments in the pre-Qin and Han Dynasties, summarized in five categories of ancient colors. Based on the classification of which, the paper investigate the texture and the utilization. This paper examines the origin of each pigment, identification characteristics, as well as its chemical name. It also examines the using condition and characteristic, as well as relevant coloring skills of each pigment in the pre-Qin and Han Dynasties. With the records of ancient literature, it describes this pigment in the use of ancient occasion to expand the horizons of pigment observation. Furthermore, with the latest research results, it verifies ancient pigment making method and tries to restore the methods of production of ancient pigment from the choice of materials, grinding, processing and other aspects of study.In the final chapter, this paper summarizes the theory of pigment use in the pre-Qin and Han Dynasties, examines the relationship between Pigments and the ancient Chinese Five Elements in detail using, and summarizes the use of color being subject to five elements system in the etiquette of social. pure colors and the secondary color is the important areas of ancient color research, through the study of ancient dyeing process, as well as combing the ancient literature, it is considered that the pre-Qin period of Five primly hue is characterize by pheasant feathers as a standard. Cyan blue is a kind of indigo blue dyed out by grass, the color and lustre are gaudy and calm. Dark red is cinnabar red, Yellow is the yellow with red, White is pure white, Black is paint black. Qi official document, "Kao Gong Ji", recorded the ancient rules of using colors. The ancients value the use of five primly and put forward three kinds of schemes in color overall collocation: Blue with white collocation, cyan primarily; red and black collocation, bright red primarily; the xuan black and yellow collocation, black primarily. The local color has always been to remain independent, and not mixed but side by side. Color ideas in the pre-Qin and Han Dynasties include several schools of various rich contents, greatly affected the history in many aspects. The paper seeks relationships between the five elements and the five colors, and finally puts forward the pre-Qin color aesthetic, mainly concluding five kinds of aesthetics categories and aesthetic propositions, which are watching for images, graceful one, conforming to the rituals of state, the pledges to beauty, and five-color resulting eyeless.
