The Personality Of Confucius

The most basic conditions for the formation of personality is that the subject has the freedom to choose what to do. This freedom is related with human's awareness to nature and society. Relationship between man and nature, and society is discribed with this concept of"tianming"in ancient times. Tian, is representing outside human's strength; Ming, reflects relations of tian and human. Confucian concept of tianming is the theoretical basis for the formation of his personality.The tianming view is changing along with the society development. In the Shang period, people thought the dynasty the fate had nothing to do with the King's behavior, it was mainly decided by tian. In the Western Zhou dynasty, people realized that Wang and upper-class members's cautious behavior and being concerned about the people was to protect destiny. Though this new tianming concept had a clear utilitarian and theological meaning, it was such a new leap of human consciousness that it laid the foundation for people to focus on their values and pursue personality perfection in the future. The relationship between fate and behavior of Wang and upper-class members gave birth to the Western Zhou Dynasty posthumous assessable system .In Spring and Autumn period, the scope of tianming concept had been expanded, people concerned about the fate of the relationship with the regime while also increasingly concerned about the fate of the impact of personal destiny. Some people were turning away from the mystery of tian, and restrained themselves with ritual propriety in order to have the best luck for a country or one family or oneself. In addition, some monarch and aristocrat regarded their own obligations as the most important part of tianming, and it revealed that the people is out of the utilitarian tendencies that self-cultivation of virtue was to be blessed.Confucius' concept of tianming based on the pursuit of the value of individual life, and he discovered the unity of tian and man. So person must cultivate character and shape the personality. Achieving unity of tian and man is a person's mission and the highest pursuit. Confucius spent a lifetime to achieve what he realizes the concept of tianming. It was obvious in the real world that Confucius was able to maintain the integrity of moderation everyday.Confucius' personality of moderation consists of his basic disposition and refinement. His basic disposition refers to authoritative conduct, which mainly includes three aspects: straight, a sense of filial and fraternal responsibility, and loyalty and good faith. These are the necessary prerequisite to achieve Confucius's personality of moderation, and they reflect the true of Confucian personality. Refinement refers to ritual propriety and music. Ritual propriety makes everybody do best in his position about a sense of filial and fraternal responsibility, and loyalty and good faith so that society can keep order and everyone get what they want. Confucius had been implementing ritual propriety for all his life, that formed the felicitous of Confucian personality. The essence of music is harmony. The harmony can adjust all kinds of emotion lead to be happy immensely. One's greatest pleasure is the unity physiological emotion and moral reasoning in harmony. Music represents the highest artistic realization of being consummate person to Confucius. And music formed the beautiful of Confucian personality. So Confucian personality of moderation is the organic unity of the true and the felicitous and the beautiful also.Achievement of Confucian personality was through two, the intelligence could ensure that Confucius weighed things up and did anything being appropriate. And it could let Confucius to keep moderate for ever. At the same time, learning was the main feature of Confucian intelligence. The courage was necessary quality to achieve personality of moderation. It helped Confucius go on walking on the authoritative way and face fault straightly and so on.
