Abstract/Summary:
American contemporary Sinologist Stephen Owen has innumerable great achievements on the media-translation and study of the poetry of the Tang Dynasty, and is popular with people from western Sinology circles and culturati.This dissertation, using the method of close reading, comparative imagologie and comparison study in a cross-cultural situation of comparative literature and focusing on the translation, interpretation of Tang Poetry, the writing of history of Tang Poetry of Stephen Owen, attempts to explore emphatically his method in Studies of Tang Poetry and poetic view in the writing of history of Tang Poetry, and value his status in the process of Studies of Tang Poetry in western Sinology circles as well as his academic interest and theoretical significance for Chinese scholars objectively.The text is divided into six parts. The Preface gives an introduction of studying history on Stephen Owen and of studying methods and significances of this thesis. Chapter One summarizes the preconditions and cultural background of Studies of Tang Poetry of Stephen Owen:dating back to the history of translating and introducing Tang Poetry in the sinology circles of France and Britain, exploring the great effect on Studies of Tang Poetry in America. Chapter Two, referring to translation of Tang Poetry of Owen, discusses the viewpoint and strategy of translation of Tang Poetry of Owen through comparing the translated copies of several selected Tang poems by Owen and other translators, and also values his characteristic in the translation of Tang Poetry as well as gain and loss. Chapter Three studies the structure, contents and methods of writing the history of Tang poetry by Owen, and analyzes emphatically the reasonableness of the methods as well as its significance in constructing the history of Tang poetry. Chapter Four analyzes the image of poets in the Tang Dynasty and "the image of dual self" in Stephen Owen's writing the history of Tang Poetry from a perspective of the theory of contemporary comparative imagologie.In the last place, Conclusive Part generalizes the poetic viewpoints and methodological characteristic in his writing the history of Tang Poetry, as well as the significance of enlightenment for studies of Chinese ancient literature theory including Studies of Tang Poetry.
