Culturology Criticism During Transfer Term

Su Ching Chen was a great scholar, educationist who was accomplished in culture of Chinese and Western in modern academe history of China. Up to now, all of investigations on Chen's scholarship were almost based on his argumentation of wholesale westernization, but the whole academic system of Chen was seldom studied from the view of culturology. In this work, we persisted in materialistic interpretation of history with considering Chen being in historical background of society transform and academe Chinesization. With the methods of hermeneutic and culturology, we analyzed the internal, historical and dynamical relation among Chen's research fields. Chen's culturology system was reconstructed and judged. Moreover, we compared this study with others investigation on Chen's scholarship, culturology history and academe history in modern history of china. The following is the summary of this thesis.Chapterl: With disintegration of sociology, anthropology and relative discipline, culture school became the most activist before the half of the twentieth century. Grasping observantly the pulsation of western learning evolvement, Chen gave systemic argumentation so as to demonstrate the possibility and necessity of establishing culturology. By rearranging different subject sort, Chen defined the research content and format of culturology, and confirmed isolated position of culturology of modal knowledge. Meanwhile, Chen established the direction to enhance culture research through the following aspects, namely, religion, politics, economy and ethic et al. His center of culturology and phase doctrine of culture was determined by this research direction.Chapter2: Chen had strong theory foundation and the ability for studying social problem with sociological theory since he received strict and systemic training of sociological knowledge in America. During his investigation on social problem, he came into being principle of combining dialectic with practicality and method of etymology. Which provided based value judgment and argument method for his research in culturology. Under the edification of sociology and anthropology in America and Germany, Chen surveyed evolutionism, diffusion theory and criticism school by virtue of dialectic and the value of practicality. Moreover, he came into being a new evolutionism depending on culture plurolism, which was the foundation of Chen's culturology system. The new evolutionism was a theory for Chen to explore developing of culturology and explain the culture discrepancy of different area and nations.Based on evolutionism, Chen rearranged a series of concept, category and fundamental of western sociology and anthropology according to triple characteristic of static, dynamics and complicated collectivity of culturology, and then formatted his culturology system. In this culturology system, the rationale was evolutionism, the core of concept is culture, key theory was culture impartibility, and explanation model was culture component, culture center, culture development, culture phase, and 'consistent and harmonious'. To a great extent, Chen's culturology system is formal, rather than logistic. Thereinto, some fatal limitation could not be amended, or be neglected completely by Chen himself, which disturbed the foundation of his culturology system, even denied drastically the validity.Chapter3: Chen established culturology so as to prove the argumentation on wholesale westernizations. From 1934 to 1936 and about 1941, Chen made a controversy without mercy to different culture view by use of his unsystematic culturology. Chen's argumentations on culture impartibility, consistent and harmonious, time and condition, culture concept, and so on, were attacked fiercely.
