As the basic course in the field of Art and Literature Study, An Introduction to Literary Theories has been taught in universities up till now. Despite the fact that many scholars are renewing the content and have published about two hundred textbooks since 1980s, there is no strong and active response from the users. Thus this dissertation is a trying in seeking for the reasons and the answers.This dissertation is to study the context in which An Introduction to literary Theories, the classical way of Art and Literature Study, starts and develops. It is also concerned with the historical developing process, the enlightenment and knowledge resources the course offers to us, and what need to be reflected and improved. With all these matters discussed in the context of Chinese and Western cultural collision and the thriving of modern education and translation, this dissertation points out the problems existing and shows the direction of the construction and development of this course.The dissertation contains four chapters:Chapter One traces back the historical route through which Modern Chinese An Introduction to Literary Theories has undergone, its starting and development, and reveals how the modem literary theories have developed from the traditionalones with the thriving of modern education and translation.Chapter two studies the influence of western An Introduction to Literary Theories in China, as it is not "domestic " but "imported". In fact, the abundant introduction and translation of foreign literary theory textbooks has provided direct guidance for Chinese literary theories in knowledge, resources, theoretical categories and stylistic frames.Charter Three deals with the shaping and development of modern Chinese An Introduction to Literary Theories There are three models of writing and editing the textbooks in the earlier days - the western, the traditional and the proletarian. And from the late 1930s to the early 1950s, before the former Soviet Union model, the combination of the first and the third ones has become the mainstream of modern An Introduction to Literary Theories, the second one being substituted by western model and gradually disappearing.Chapter Four is a case study on the changes of literary concepts. It describes how the categories and models of the modern Chinese An Introduction to Literary Theories have come into being in the process of receiving foreign influence, in the metaphysical reasoning and essentialist pursuit. Taking the "pure literature" and "typical character" as two specific cases, this chapter reflects on the problems concerned and is to put forward constructive ideas.
