Our government is carrying out a policy of developing west of China at present, which we should draw a lesson from the history. YUan dynasty is a vital stage when we study the development of northwest in the history from overall aspects.YUan government strengthened the control of northwest area in administration after having founded a unitary empire and made the administrative division of northwest stabilization, which afforded a guaranty for developing economy of northwest area. The rulers as the representative of Khubilai carried forward actively the economic interchange and complement between northwest area and the interior on the thought that all people under the sun were one family. For the purpose, YUan government took a series of effective measures to develop agriculture and pasture, industry and commerce, communications etc. in the northwest area and obtained new achievements: forming a new national pattern and multiple economy in the northeast area; discovering the true source and dredging partial transport of Yellow River, which was an important place in the history of Yellow River's development; improving unprecedentedly the conditions of local communications by establishing posts and strengthening to run them in the northwest area, which had a great effect on the communication of Ming-Qing dynasty down to today; Ningxia being named officially in YUan dynasty and Ningxia plain becoming beautiful "lush southern-type fields north of the Great Wall" on the base of the development of YUan dynasty.Agriculture and communication were the important parts during the development of the northwest area in YUan dynasty. Commerce development was a main way to promote the form of multiple economy and economic interchange and complement in northwest area. Ecological environment was weaker and the natural disasters took place frequently, so relief was a necessary measure for YUan government to ensure the economic development of the northwest going on smoothly.We may absorb experiences and learn a lesson from the economy development of the northwest in YUan dynasty to offer the historic references for developing the northwest China today.
