The study of K'un-ts'an's painting lags behind that of the other "four monk painters".On the basis of contribution made by former scholars, this dissertation adopts thetheories of social culture ,iconology and document, aiming to make a thorough studyon his life, thoughts of paiting and artistic style .Although it is a study of individual, it also admits the whole process of old fogy's culture of early Qing period, whichcombines art, culture and distinctive life of that era. It reveals humanity thoughts of K'un-ts'an, probes into the reasons and characters of his artistic style formation. The dissertation makes an exact textual research about time and reasons for hisbecoming a monk; whether he revolted against Qing government; the formation of hisold fogy's character and its expression; his social activities and thoughts, etc. It tries to expose the whole course of K'un-ts'an's life and the track of his soul. K'un-ts'an regards painting as a cause to which he will devote all his life. Clouds and Mountains in his painting become the home of his soul. His painting is deeply affected by the Chan sect, the freedom of soul brings about the freedom of his artistic creation. Under the atmosphere of modelling after ancient style in early Qing period, K'un-ts'aninsists on learning after various ancient masters'style, opposes over-simplifiedcopying, emphasizes learning after nature and expressing the feeling of soul, usingcalligraphic strokes in painting. So he forms his own artistic style of landscapepainting: "'vast, deep and sevene scenery", "in ragged clothes and with dishevelledhair". In the end, through the analysis of situation of JingLing painting world in earlyQing period and establishment of the concept "four monk painters", this dissertationcomfirms K'un-ts'an's achievements and position in chinese art history, deepinfluence of his artistic style on many descendant artists. |
