Comparative Study On The Chinese And Korean Stylistics Of Official Documents

The languages people use in the rich, varied and complex social life can not always follow the same pattern under all circumstances. Instead, they may change in accordance with the different domain, purpose and task of social intercourses and in each case displays its own distinctive characteristics that differentiate itself from all the other forms of writing. This is what we call stylistics. Various social intercourses conducted by people through languages must adopt certain style of writing and are in turn conditioned by the style adopted. Compared with other literary forms, official documents present unique characteristics in terms of the keynote of the style, the choice of words, and grammatical instruments. It can be said that the official documents are the most standardized form of writing among all the literary forms.Either in foreign language teaching or in one's translation work, how to write or translate official documents correctly is a difficult subject. For this reason, this thesis chooses to deal with the stylistics of official documents as its major object of research. By conducting a comparative study on Chinese and Korean official documents, and by sorting out and analyzing numerous language materials, the paper offers a detailed elaboration on the stylistics of official documents.The content of this thesis consists of the following aspects: put aside the introduction and conclusion part, chapter 2 makes a general exposition of the Chinese and Korean official documents, introducing the definition, domain, classification and historical transitions of the official documents. Chapter 3, 4 and 5 constitutes the major part of this thesis. Chapter 3 is divided into five sections: the first section discusses the origin and features of Chinese/Korean official documents, and also explores the phenomenon of the equivalence between the words inherent in the Korean language and those Korean words that are written in Chinese characters; the second section is devoted to the discussion of the correspondence between the words inherent in the Korean language and the Chinese words. In the third section, a large quantity of Korean words using Chinese characters and corresponding Chinese words are sorted out and studied in six aspects, including synonyms with the same form, words of the same form but are partly synonymous, and synonymous with different forms, etc. section 4 deals with the alien words in official documents; and section 5 discusses the common phrases used in official documents. Chapter 4 compares the syntaxes of Chinese and Korean official documents. There are all together two sections in this chapter, namely, sentencepatterns, the type of sentences. And chapter 5, a comparison between the structure of Chinese and Korean official documents are made.To sum up, this thesis, firstly, inquires into the comparison between the Chinese and Korean official documents, a field that has not been touched upon before; and, secondly, with a particular stress on sorting out and providing materials, a lot of work has been done for this end. Hopefully, this thesis will provide valuable referential support for the advanced language teaching, translation and theoretical studies in the future.
