The present dissertation aims at expounding the translation and communication, the influence and the study of the Modernist master T.S.Eliot(Thomas Stearns Eliot, 1888-1965) in China. It looks at the spreading and reception of T.S.Eliot in China as an organic process and attempts to examine the process against the background of Sino-westem cultural communication in modern and contemporary history, trying to carry out an integral study of "T.S. Eliot in China".Besides Introduction and Conclusion, the dissertation consists of four chapters:1)T.S. Eliot: A great master of Anglo-American modernist poetry;2)The introduction and translation of T.S.Eliot in China;3) T.S.Eliot Study in China; 4) "Awareness of the Waste Land":The influence and reception of T.S.Eliot in China. The four chapters form an integral whole. Writers always start their "journey"(influence) in another culture with introduction and translation, and translation itself is a sort of reception. Translation betrays the translators' subjectivity and the special need of certain historical and cultural context.The influence of foreign literature will be reflected in native creative writings, influence and reception are two sides of one thing. Literary study is another integral part of literature reception, it embodies the researchers aesthetic judgment and certain historical need and is a process of discrimination and digestion. At the same time, study of foreign literature deepens the reception context. In brief, translation, study and influence are integral parts of "T.S. Eliot in China", they are interrelated and interact. Since the dissertation is about the spreading and reception of T.S. Eliot in China, a brief study of T.S.Eliot unquestionably comes to be the first task of this dissertation, because a clear understanding of the Source(T.S.Eliot) is the essential prerequisite of combing out the Flow(the spreading and reception of T.S. Eliot).The Introduction briefly explains the object, the method, the academic achievements of this subject and the theoretical practical significance of this study.T.S.Eliot. as the great master of Anglo-American modernist poetry, has beenplaying a leading role for several decades in English poetry and have great influence on the Anglo-American literature. So Anglo-American critics call the thirty years from the 30s to the 60s of the 20th century "T.S. Eliot's Time". The publication of The Waste Land (1922) starts a new direction for the English poetry and established T.S.Eliot's position as the great master of modernist poetry. Eliot is also an outstanding literary critic. He brought fourth a set of new standards for literary criticism and appreciation. T.S.Eliot was introduced into China in the 20s of the 20th century, when Chinese New Verse was at its beginning period, and he has exerted great influence on Chinese New Verse. Many famous Chinese modern and contemporary poets such as Wen Yiduo,Xu Zhimo, Dai Wangshu, Sun Dayu, Bian Zhilin, He Qifang, Mu Dan, Yuan Kejia, Xin Di, Tang Shi and Zheng Min have accepted Eliot's influence to some degrees. Without Eliot, their poems should have presented another shape. Therefore, if we want to have a clear understanding of Chinese New Verse, we should have a comprehensive study of the relationship between T.S.Eliot and Chinese New Verse.China has done a great deal of translation and study of T.S. Eliot ever since he was introduced to this country. Almost all of Eliot's important poems and critic treatises have been translated into Chinese, and his most influential poems such as "The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock ","The Waste Land" and "TheFour Quartets "have several Chinese versions.
