The stamp has been an indispensible part of Chinese culture and the colorful culture knowledgecontained in them has made a great contribution to the development of the cultural exchange betweenChina and western countries. More and more foreigners are eager to get some China-specific cultureknowledge while they collect stamps. Thus, our urgent task is to translate the culture in the stamp intoEnglish accurately and systematically to propagate the Chinese culture in the stamp to the whole world.Nevertheless, in the inter-cultural communication of translation, the SL writer and the TL reader live in thedifferent social environments, so they have different cultural background knowledge and such culturaldifferences pose a big challenge and problem for translation. Though there have been quite a lot ofresearches in this aspect, the research specialized in the translation of stamp introduction is extremely rare. The thesis mainly analyzes how to deal with cultural differences in C-E translation of stampintroduction from the perspective of reception aesthetics. After making a retrospection and comment on thecultural differences between China and western countries and the previous methods to deal with culturaldifferences in translation, the author discusses the development and main concepts of reception aestheticsand analyzes its essential connection with translation. Then the author explores the translator’s and reader’sstatus and role in the translation process from the perspective of reception theory, proposing two principlesthat the translator should abide by in the translation of stamp album from the angle of reception aesthetics:one is to make the TL reader get the pleasure of aesthetic value of the source text and the other one is tomake the TL reader obtain the pleasure of cultural exploration of the source text, on the basis of which theauthor further analyzes some translation methods to deal with cultural differences in stamp album such as,literal translation with an endnote or a footnote, contextual amplification, transliteration and paraphrase and so on. At the same time, the author points out these translation methods are indispensible andcomplementary to each other, since there are many factors influencing the translator’s option of translationmethods, translators should hold a realistic and elastic attitude to make a best choice in the translationpractice.
