The art works by Vincent Van Gogh and Xu wei are usually misunderstood because of their mental disorder. Many scholars have addressed synchronic study on them; nevertheless there hasn't been a real research on this subject, which may contribute to the introspection of art principles. This paper is a comparison between Vincent Van Gogh and Xu wei in terms of their personalities and art works, which demonstrates the straightforwardness and sincereness in their personalities in real life, and the self-conscientiousness and the eagerness for independence in their personalities of pursuing ideal. Influenced by their specific personalities, they insisted to express their true inner world by art and to make their art works reach their natural quality as well. Except for the similarities, the differences between the two artists are that the art works of Van Gogh emphasize more on the mixture of the love of gods and friendship while those of Xu wei's are mostly to express his critic and disaffection toward the real life.
