In this dissertation, theories of the middle range, research on historic texts and interdisciplinary methods are employed to approach to the complicated relationship between China fine arts and the society in the period from the end of Qing Dynasty to the beginning of Republic of China, and the emphasis is shifted from event historiography to the implied structure in events, bringing it into a broader research vision.There are five chapters in this dissertation. In Chapter One, the development of the meaning of "fine art" is examined from the viewpoint of language analysis and social changes, and it is revealed that there exists a discrepancy between the signifier and the signified of "fine arts" in practical use. In Chapter Two, the intrinsic relationship between society and the role practice of art subject is explained by examining the social role of artists in society transforming period from the perspectives of role transformation and role imbalance. In Chapter Three, the development and the vicissitude of China painting and calligraphy associations are elaborated and the functional connection between aesthetic models and art associations are studied through examining and comparing China painting and calligraphy associations in the period from the end of Qing Dynasty to the beginning of Republic of China. In Chapter Four, art revolution associations are analyzed respectively to show the socializing process and associating forms of art communities and to illustrate the interdependent relationship among ideology, social atmosphere and art associations. In Chapter Five, female sex images in China art during the modern times are studied from sexism research point of view to show the shaped process of art images by social culture through explaining the constructing and influencing of female body images by sex dominating relations.
