The theory of spirit creating form, which was put forward by Shilu in 1960s, is regarded as a new progress on the theory of the relation between form and spirit in the history of Chinese art theory. The study proves that, Shilu ' s theory is set up on the foundation of the heritage of traditional Chinese art theory and Marxist materialist dialectics, and is successfully tried in his artistic creation, it includes the following main points : Firstly, spirit is decided by real life ; the start point of an artist ' s creation is his first - view perception which reflects the uniform of the artist ' s ego and the spirit of nature . Secondly, spirit creates form, it will decrease if someone wants to use form to capture it . Thirdly, to break any classic formal rule as someone finds it is difficult to exactly express his own feeling , and to keep struggling artistic brush strokes in harmony . Fourthly, "My language" is not only real for "Me" , but also is new for creation .By analyzing the original structure of Chinese philosophic thought and considering the influence of the traditional Chinese art theory and of times art waves which happened in China on Shilu, the paper provides 5 chapters to discuss the statement of "Spirit creates form" by means of rearranging and analyzing Shilu ' s theory on brush strokes and his methodology on painting from real life; and, to conclude that the practical methodology on "Spirit creates form " is exactly a theory on brush strokes, oppositely, the philosophic foundation of the theory on brush strokes is exactly Shilu's statements on "Spirit creates form" .
