Space Characteristic And Geographical Foundation Of The Mental Coins' In The Spring And Autumn And The Warring States Periods

The relation between currency and geography in history has not been given enough attention nor emphasized by academic circles at present yet. This paper tries to study this topic and to supply the lack in this research field. In this article, author chooses three kinds of coins which looked as knife,cloth and round in the Yellow River Valley as the main studying objects during Spring and Autumn period and Warring States period when the currency economy was the most prosperous and metal currency was very popular. Meanwhile, this paper inquires into the relationship between geography and these three targets.This paper mainly includes six contents:First, begin to construct the research theory system of Historical Currency Geography. In this article , the author not only exposes such questions as the research objects, the specific content, its connection with other principles and the research ways, but also offers the suggestion that it were necessary for academic circle to initiate the study on Chinese Geography in every dynasty. The author contends that the problems of regional currency, which have existed in Chinese money system for a long time since prior Qin, should be studied wholly and systematically.Second, complete the reorganization and preparation of information which is necessary for the study of Currency Geography during Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. Sorting out datum is an inevitable step in any scientific research and it is unexceptional for studying Historical Currency Geography. This part includes the systematic organization and classification of information about coins of knife, cloth and round, which were found out in documents in recent one hundred years and the results from archaeological excavation ( from appendix 1 to 6) , throughout Yellow River Valley in Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. In all, the number of these places where all types of currencies were excavated reached more than 200. Furthermore, this paper examines systematically the dependability of these documents and the value of studying Currency Geography during these two periods, which furnishes the historical data basic for discussion.The third, probe into the developing space - time feature of foundry region of bronze currency in Yellow River Valley during Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. Above all, this part ensures the criteria of evaluating the foundry places in the aspect of foundry technology and holds that only the places with monetary models can be looked up as the places where the coins lies in. Certainly,the places with currency models, from archaeological excavation, can only determine the foundry regions. According to this, author restores some distinguished foundry places, there are 28 places totally, and summarizes the developing regularity of the foundry regions these times.The fourth, study wholly and systematically the circulation areas of all varieties of currencies, including coins of knife, cloth and so on during Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. According to the principles of money shape's uniform, dynamic developing of regions and the relatives of boundaries, this part divides the circulation areas of the bronze coins in Yellow River Valley into different forms, and studies the basic circulation scopes, boundaries and spatial differences interior the regions in detail. On this basis, this part of paper summarizes some basic laws on these coins'formation and evolution, and six effectively geographic factors to it, among which are natural, economic, national, political, military and religious geography factors. Apart from these, this paper insists that these factors overlapped and functioned together, and grew into geographic foundation affecting the form and evolution of monetary circulation areas in the periods of Spring and Autumn and Warring States.The fifth, study the economic regions of currency and its spatial construction.
