This paper summarizes the research work the author has performed in modern Chinese literature in recent years and the theoretical reflection on relevant literary phenomena. By analyzing the formation and conversion of modem Chinese literature and its characteristics and literary forms from a viewpoint of mass media with modern newspapers and periodicals as subjects, the paper proposes the theoretical assumption of establishing modern "Great Literature" following the studies of history of literature, and fulfils preliminary research in practice. The research carried out in the field of modern Chinese literature from the viewpoint of modem mass media involves newspapers and periodicals not only as a background and carriers of literature, but as subjects of research, essential component of the organism to develop modern literature, and as sign system of literary existence. And thus the research will bring about a breakthrough in the methods of literary studies and modem literary conceptions, establish new research patterns, and strengthen our understanding of the nature of modem literature.Starting with discussing two important achievements of "going to world literature" and "modern transition of Chinese literature" that have been gained in the research of modem Chinese literature since 1980s, the paper suggests re-understanding and reconstructing the academic way of thinking in modern Chinese literature. Moreover, in the working pattern of modern mass media, modern intellectuals made full use of the political function of newspapers and periodicals, facilitating the development of literature by means of movement and revolution in an attempt to solve social problems with help of literature. So characteristicsof modern literature were formed and the extensive phenomena of modern writers and modem literary forms constituted accordingly. It is admitted that modern mass media provided a platform for modern intellectuals to express their ideas so that writers discussed social, life and cultural problems in newspapers and periodicals in literary forms and created a public field in which intellectuals participate. The new nature of modern literature in modern mass media presents original features. Above all, modern literature shows its modem nature by means of mass media and transmitting methods. On the other hand, the modem nature of literary creation embodies modern creative pattern of thinking and modern aesthetic characteristics initiated by mass media and their working methods. So integrative characteristics turned into a breach for us to understand the modern natures of literary works. The fact that modern mass media have citizens for their subjects determines the developing trend towards serving the common people, In this sense modern Chinese literature belongs to common literature which consists of new literature and popular literature. The newspapers and period...
