He Lin, a famous ideologist in Chinese contemporary ideological history, is one of the key representatives of contemporary Neo-Confucianism. In 1930's—1940's, he established the ideological system of "Neo-Idealism of Lu&Wang(Neo-Idealism of Lu Xiangshan and Wang Yangming)" by integrating the Chinese culture with Western culture comprehensively. Based on Idealism of Lu&Wang(Idealism of Lu Xiangshan and Wang Yangming), his cultural view takes the Substance-function view as its kernel and involves such fields as philosophy, religion, morality, politics, economics and human life, which shows strong sense of his times and deep humane concern. The brilliance and profoundity of his cultural insight makes him prominent in modern ideological history.Based on the cultural determinism of Neo-Confucianism, He Lin attributed the national crisis since former modern times to cultural crisis and tried to modernize the Confucianism in order to seek the way which can help the revival of Chinese nation. Focusing on the situation of the anti-Japanese war in his time, he proposed the idea of academic establishment of the country with the hope that the development of Neo-Confucianism could lay the spiritual foundation for saving the nation from the war. He held that the Idealism of Lu&Wang can not only best represent the real spirit of Confucius and Mencius but also best meet the temporal demand for individual and national self-consciousness thanks to its emphasis on self-awareness.The "Neo-Idealism of Lu&Wang" proposed by He Lin, a comprehensive and innovating system which takes the Idealism of Lu Xiangshan and WangYangming as its foundation, absorbs the essence of western rationalism and combines the spirit of his times. He believed that this new philosophy represented the authentic tradition of Chinese and Western classical philosophy and, with the sense of reason, sensibilities and his times, could provide answers for all kinds of problem of human life and society. His summary and comment for the 50 year's of Chinese philosophy since theend of Qing dynasty was stated by developing the spirit of the Idealism of Lu&Wang. And at the same time, he also regarded the spirit of the Idealism of Lu&Wang as the kernel of Neo-Confucianism.By widely absorbing the ideas of Chinese and Western philosophical schools, He Lin established his cultural philosophy, which took the Idealism of Lu&Wang as its substance and sought for new function. He hoped that, under this cultural philosophy, a new Confucianism and national culture — the national study both of substance and function — could be conceived by cultural criticism. Idealism was the foundation of his cultural philosophy while idealism and spirit of freedom were the basic characteristics of his cultural view. Applying the principal of "unity of substance and function" to study the internal relationship of each cultural section, He Lin put forth the basic policy of Confucianizing and Sinonizing western culture and made criticism to such cultural opinions as "Chinese substance and western function", "total westernization" and "China-standard culture", based on which he pointed out the appropriate approaches that should be adopted for the new development of Confucianism. He Lin always studied the social and life problems based on former modern spirit so that he may provide the spiritual direction and support to the age of industrialization. Morally, he held the belief of "Full Development of Nature" or self-fulfillment, which took the ideal or reason as the basis of "real morals" and described the progress of morals or the forming of "new morals" as the logic process of spiritual self-fulfillment. He made new explanation to traditional Chinese morals with contemporary western spirit and, combining the practical requirement of the commercial and industrial society, endowed the Egoism of Yang Zhu and the Master Mo's spirit of universal love with new ethic value, revealed the moral ideal and religious affection of the new western utilitarianism. He made bran-new explanation to "Five Constant Human Rel...
